The Lady Shannon to whom this book is dedicated was probably Catherine Ponsonby, daughter of John Ponsonby, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. In 1763, she married Richard Boyle, son of Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon. Richard succeeded to the title as 2nd Earl of Shannon upon the death of his father in 1764.
