"Cotter, George Sackville (1755-1831), poet and translator, was the fourth son of Sir James Cotter. He was educated at Westminster School, of which he was captain in 1770, and in 1771 he was elected to St. Peter's College, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. in 1775 and M.A. in 1779. Having taken holy orders he became vicar of Kilmacdonough, and rector of Kilcreddan-Garrivoe and Ightermorragh, diocese of Cloyne. In 1788 he published two volumes of 'Poems,' dedicated to Lady Shannon, and consisting of a poem in two books, entitled 'Prospects,' and a collection of odes and other fugitive pieces. In 1826 he published a translation of Terence for the use of the schools, in the preface to which he states that when at Westminster School he had been an actor in three of Terence's comedies. In the following year he printed seven of the plays of Plautus, 'translated literally and grammatically, and cleared of objectionable passages.' The later years of his life were spent at Youghal, Cork, and he died in 1831. By his wife, a daughter of Bayly Rogers, physician and banker of Cork, he left, with other issue, four sons."

George Sackville Cotter was named after Lord George Sackville, a friend of his father's, and was known as "a great musician." His translations of the comedies of Plautus was "Plauti Comoediae septem selectae; Anglice redditae, expurgatae." The comedies are Aulularia, Epidicus, Menaechmi, Mercator, Pseudolus, Trinummus, and Rudens. The book was published by J. F. Dove, London, in 1827. The poems dedicated to Lady Shannon were published by William Flynn, Cork, in 1788. The full title is "Poems, consisting of odes, songs, pastorals, satyrs, &c, and a descriptive poem in four books, called Prospects." His translations of the comedies of Terence was "Four Comedies of Terence, translated, and the stage management and mode of acting them set down, as they were acted at Westminster School; and also the other two comedies of Terence, the Heautotimorumenos and the Hecyra..." It was published by Dodges and M'Arthur, Dublin, in 1824. George Cotter also wrote "An Essay on the Best Mode of Extension of Agriculture in Ireland, by the breaking up and cultivating lay or grasslands." It was printed by A. Edwards, Cork, in 1802. It was originally published in "Transactions of the Royal Dublin Society, 1801." Grorge Cotter is listed in "A Critical Dictionary of English Literature and British and American Authors" by A. Austin Allibone, published by J.B. Lippincott, Philadelphia, in 1858, and in "The Poets of Ireland: A Biographical Dictionary" by David J. O'Donoghue, published by the author, London, in 1892-3.

George Cotter was a Captain in the 69th Foot and served in the Peninsular campaign. He fought at Quatre Bas and also under Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, when he was awarded a medal. On 1 December 1816 he was placed on half pay. Around 1837, he emigrated to the Toronto, Ontario, area. On 17 July 1839, he made application for the issue of patents for his purchase of military land. At that time, he owned the mills at Newmarket, Ontario, where he had lived since June of 1837. He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 10th Battalion, York Militia, Canada West, receiving his commission on 10 November 1846. He held an earlier commission as Lieutenant-Colonel (24 January 1838) under the earlier organization of the militia. In the early 1850s, he moved to Dunn Township, Haldimand County, Ontario.

It is possible that Rogers Cotter was born in Kilmichael, County Cork, Ireland, since his father was Vicar there from 1784-1797. Rogers Cotter is identified in his 1810 marriage record as "Rogers Cotter of City of Dublin Esquire." He attended Trinity College, Cambridge (matriculated 1806, but did not graduate), and later graduated as a physician and surgeon from Trinity College, Dublin, and then the University of Edinburgh, on 1 August 1815. His dissertation was entitled "Dissertatio medica inauguralis de tympanita," and was published in Edinburgh in 1815. He entered the army as a surgeon's mate in the West Meath Militia on 26 March 1811. He was assistant surgeon from 1817 until 1829, when the regiment disbanded. He was also surgeon and physician of Balinacaryge Dispensary. He published "The Fables of Aesop, in Latin hexameter verse translated from the original Greek," in Dublin in 1833. Rogers Cotter and his family emigrated in 1835. They sailed on the ship Tallahassee, originating in Ireland, and departing ultimately from Liverpool. The ship arrived in New York on 8 July 1835. The following family members are on the passenger list: Rogers Cotter, no age given; Mrs. (?) Cotter, age 39; James L. Cotter, age 17; George L. Cotter, age 19; John R. Cotter, age 13; Lydia Cotter, age 15; Annabella M. Cotter, age 11, and; A. Cotter, age 1 (female). Upon their arrival, Rogers stated that his destination was Ohio. However, he went instead to Ontario, settling in Toronto Gore Township, Peel County, Ontario. There is no record to indicate that he ever went to the Park Hill, Ontario, area with his sons. On 28 September 1835, he applied to purchase Lot 12, Concession 10, of the Gore of Toronto (Clergy Reserves), but the lot was not for sale. He was described as a "Doctor of Medicine and Surgeon," and "lately arrived in this province with a numerous family." Rogers Cotter is listed in the 1837 census of Toronto, Gore Township, York County, as "Dr. Cotter," living at Concession 10, Lot 12, in the Gore of Toronto. On 9 July 1839, he applied to purchase the same lot, where he had been living as a lessee. Rogers Cotter is listed in "The City of Toronto and the Home District Commercial Directory and Register with Almanack and Calendar for 1837." He appears on page 38 in a list of physicians and on page 162, as living in the Gore of Toronto, Northern Division, Concession 10, Lot 12. Rogers Cotter may have been the Cotter (first name not given) who was buried in McGillivary Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, on 23 September 1845, age 60.

The address given on the baptismal record of his son, George Sackville Cotter, is Strawling Lodge. The baptism took place in Clane, County Kildare, Ireland.

Notes:

George Cotter was a Colonel in the Royal Madras Artillery and served in the Indian campaign. He was invested as a Companion of the Order of the Bath. Some details of his career:

He served in the Indian Mutiny Campaign in Bengal from June 1857 to September 1858. He was ordered to Allahabad but was detained in Benares in consequence of the mutiny at that station from July to September. He was employed in a command in the Palamov district in November and December. He joined the Jounpore Field Force and was present of the taking of Nusrutpore and Chanda, actions of Umeepore and Sultanpore, also the attack on the fort of Dowrara. He commanded the Madras Artillery at the siege of Lucknow. Afterwards, he was present at the relief of Azimghur, the taking of Jugdespore and several minor actions in command of the Artillery.

He was thanked by the Governor General of India. He was five times mentioned in dispatches and received the C.B. Medal with clasp. He, probably, received the C.B. (The Companion of the Order of the Bath) in about 1861. It is not mentioned in the Army list for 1861 but is in the edition for 1862. His Uncle Colonel George Sackville (1783-1869), probably his namesake, of the 69th Regiment fought in the Peninsular War and in the Battle of Waterloo.

seventieth year. He was the son of the Reverend James Laurence Cotter, LL.D.,
T.C.D., Vicar of Buttevant, County Cork, and he was descended from Sir James
Lombard Cotter, First Baronet of Rockforest in the County of Cork, Ireland. He
received his decoration for services in India in 1857.

James L. Cotter emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1835 with his father, and he later settled in the Park Hill, Ontario, area. In the "History of Middlesex County," James is listed as a warden and pathmaster for the year 1845. He is recorded as having owned land in Middlesex County, Ontario. The land was in McGillivray Township, Lot 23, Concession 9, and was purchased on 17 Dec 1842. His brother, George, purchased the neighboring lot, No. 22, on the same day; their brother, John, purchased Lot No. 20 on 18 Mar 1844 . However, James Cotter is also listed on the 28 September 1837 map of McGillivray Township as owning that same lot number. James Cotter appears in the 1848 census of Canada West (Ontario). He is listed on page 3, McGillivray Township, Huron (now Middlesex) County. Around 1848, James Cotter moved to Clark County, Ohio. He filed a Declaration of Intention for Naturalization in Clark County, Ohio, on 20 March 1861, but apparently never completed the naturalization process. At the time of the 1850 census, James and Maria (name given as Mary in the census) were living in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. James' age was given as 26, and his occupation was sawyer. Maria's age was given as 25. At the time of the 1860 census, the family was living in German Township, Clark County, Ohio. Included in the census is Anna Cotter, aged 66. He is listed in the 1880 census of Clark County, Ohio. James Cotter was a member of The Champion City Guard, Company A, Seventh Infantry, Ohio National Guard, during the Civil War. He purchased land from William T. Haley in the city of Springfield, Ohio, on 13 July 1855, and from James T. Warder on 14 December 1870, in Springfield Township. Around 1881, the James Cotter family moved to Illinois, settling near Claremont in Richland County. James Cotter purchased land from Robert B. and Ellen Patrick in Richland County, on 27 November 1882. The property is described in the deed as the northwest fourth of the southeast quarter of Section 26, township 4, North Range (numbered 14 west), "containing 40 acres, more or less." The property was sold by his heirs to Mary Cotter Melrose, James's daughter, for $800 on 28 November 1902, following the death of James's second wife in August 1902. James is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, Ohio, in Lot 242 of Section L. This plot was purchased by Ann Cotter on 18 April 1899.

John Quarry Cotter was probably born in the rectory of the church at Castlemagner, County Cork . Nothing is known of his early life in Ireland but, judging from his family background and the academic achievements of his brothers, he probably attended a good school . Family tradition , which of course must be treated cautiously, indicates that J.Q. Cotter's health failed while he was studying law, and he came to Australia to recuperate. It was intended that he return to County Cork when his health was restored, but it is said he liked life in the colony so well that he refused to do so - much to the irritation of his father, who had sent him money for his return fare (which he may have used to buy his property in Waverley Road). Hence his father disinherited him. He is said to have emigrated to England and lived there a short time before embarking for Australia. This may have been to circumvent the then current system of limited quotas of Irish immigrants to Australia by travelling to England to board a migrant ship, so that the records showed them as English migrants. J. Q. Cotter, then aged 16, was on the immigrant ship "Chaseley" when it sailed from "the Downs" on 27 December 1848. He was in the company (and probably in the charge) of his sister Jane Emily Percival Butler and her husband, Joseph Rogerson Cotter Butler, who was a cousin of Jane and John. Both Cotter and Butler are described as farmers on the passenger list. (John and Jane were apparently also related to the Butlers through their father's first wife, who was Anne Charlotte, daughter of Capt G.B. Butler, who was probably J.R.C. Butler's father's sister). The ship reached the Moreton Bay (Brisbane) settlement on 1 May 1849 .

COTTER, JAMES LAURENCE, HBC fur-trader and photographer; b. 24 Dec. 1839 at Jaulna (Jalna), India, son of Colonel George Sackville Cotter and Agnes Kilgour; m. 13 Sept. 1868 at Sault Ste Marie, Ont., Frances Symington Ironside, daughter of George Ironside*, and they had 11 children; d. 6 Aug. 1889 at Sault Ste Marie.

James Laurence Cotter, a descendant of an Irish baronet, was brought up by his grandmother near Edinburgh, where he attended Loretto School. He arrrived in Canada in 1857 and joined the Hudson’s Bay Company that fall as an apprentice clerkeorge Simpson* described him as “a young gentleman of good education” and sent him to Fort La Cloche (Ont.) on Lake Huron, where he was to be kept “actively engaged” and pick up the “French & Indian” languages. Cotter served two seasons at Bersimis (Betsiamites, Que.) and another at Fort Chicoutimi (Que.) as a clerk and was then transferred to Moose Factory (Ont.), the administrative headquarters of the HBC’s Southern Department. At Moose Factory, where he arrived in October 1867, Cotter was initiated into the complexities of a large fur-trading centre. In 1872 he was assigned to the Eastmain District and made junior chief trader the following year. He recommended to George Simpson McTavish, officer-in-charge at Moose Factory, that the district headquarters be moved from Little Whale River (Petite rivière de la Baleine, Que.) to Fort George (Que.). McTavish agreed, and the move was made in the summer of 1874. Cotter was promoted to chief trader in 1875, and remained at Fort George for another year, until he was sent to Rupert’s House (Fort-Rupert, Que.) to take charge of Rupert’s River District.

In 1879 Cotter returned to Moose Factory to take charge of the Southern Department, which comprised the districts of Albany, Rupert’s River, Eastmain, Moose Factory, New Post (on the Abitibi River), and Kenogamissi (on the Moose River). Te a period of important changes in the development of northern Ontario: the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the opening up of the northwest to settlement were, in Cotter’s words, “beginning to have their effect in unsettling the minds of the people.” This general instability was reflected in the difficulty Cotter experienced in retaining qualified staff, especially skilled mechanics and boat builders. He was, however, successful in obtaining higher wages and better pensions for the men. He also succeeded, despite the restrictions on space in company ships, in having the wives and families of his staff brought out and housing provided for them. As settlement advanced to the north and west, the Indians too were affected. They were exposed to epidemics of whooping cough and influenza, which invariably meant death and sorrow, a decrease in fur returns, and an increase in their debts. To protect the Indians, Cotter prevailed upon them not to travel in areas afflicted by contagious diseases. During this unsettling period, Cotter, who attained the rank of chief factor in 1883, kept the fur returns for the Southern Department reasonably stable. His interests went beyond the fur trade. He established a sawmill for the HBC at Moose Factory, brought in livestock to improve the company’s herd, and planted several productive vegetable gardens.

It is perhaps as a photographer, however, and not as a company officer that Cotter is best remembered. He made his own camera, and took some of the first photographs of the area around Hudson Bay. Nine drawings in Harper’s Weekly (New Yfe 1879, for instance, were based on Cotter’s photographs. Historians and anthropologists are particularly interested in the artistically composed, sharp, clear photographs of people, buildings, and transportation. One of his photographs, taken at Moose Factory in 1871, shows a flat-roofed building which probably dates from 1762. Others show the Moose Factory bell tower, double-masted coastal vessels, the fort cannon pointing out to James Bay, and Indians and canoes. His pictures capture scenes reminiscent of a life which had changed little since the establishment of the fort in 1673. Cotter’s photographs of the Inuit of the Eastmain District at Little Whale River, with their skin tents and kayaks, are probably the first photographs from that area.

During the winter of 1888/89 Cotter was too ill to work. He and his family left Moose Factory for Sault Ste Marie, where he died on 6 August.

He was a member of the NWMP contingent at the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. He helped build Fort Walsh and was one of three police who went into Sitting Bull's camp to encourage the Indians to go return to the United States. He retired on 4 April 1929, with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Mary Etta, beloved wife of Dr. H N Rogers died on Sunday after a long continued illness at her home on Oak st. She has been a patient sufferer for many years. Funeral services were conducted at her late residence by Rev. O V Siniff, pastorf te M E church, of which she has long been a faithful member. The members of the Relief Corps also attended in a body. The burial was at Lake City in Dr. Roger's family lot. The pall bearers were: F H Griebie, W G Brownell, C O Wescott, M W Niederkorn, D O Smith and W J Fletcher.
Miss Mary Etta Conway was born in the township of McGilvery in upper Canada on the 10th day of May A D 1846 and died at Farmington, on the 13th day of December A D 1903, aged 57 years, 7 months and 3 days.
The parents of the deceased, Mr. Patrick Conway and Mrs. Margaret Conway, moved into the United States in October A D 1857 and located in Pepin, Pepin county, Wis. The deceased went to live with a married sister who was living in the townshif Gilford, Wabasha county, Minnesota in the winter of 1860-1. By her own efforts she fitted herself for the profession of teacher and followed it for eight years, teaching in the public schools of Wabasha county the greater part of the time. Miss Conway and H N Rogers M D were married on the 18th day of February A D 1872 and lived at Zumbro Falls, in Wabasha county, State of Minnesota until A D 1886, when they moved to Whitehall, Trempeleau county, Wisconsin. In 1889 they moved to Chippewa Falls, Chippewa county, state of Wisconsin; in 1891 they moved to Bloomer, same county and in March 1895 they moved to Farmington, Dakota county, state of Minnesota where they resided at the time of her decease. Her leading characteristics were, faithful and affectionate to her husband, loyal to her friends, methodical and orderly in her work, careful and economical in the management of her home, always in sympathy with those who were sick or who had other troubles, and always industrious.
The survivors of the immediate family of deceased include Mrs. Louise Wood and Mrs. F A Vrooman of Lakeville and Mr. E S Conway of the firm of W W Kimball & Co. of Chicago.
The deceased was generally beloved in the community in which she spent the closing years of her life. An uncomplaining sufferer, she was a comfort to those who were also sufferers, was deeply interested in them and with a sweet sympathy whichs never withheld, won many from their own troubles. Owing to her health, she was not able to do all she desired to help out the interests of those she lived among and loved, but the encouragement of her cheery interest was a great help in all matters of which she had knowledge. She will be long missed by a large circle of acquaintances and friends who mourh her loss and sympathize with her husband in his bereavement.

Mrs. H. N. Rogers died at her home in Farmington last Sunday from cancer, aged fifty-seven years. Miss Mary E. Conway was born at McGilvery, Canada, and married to Dr. Rogers at Knight's Creek, Wis., Feb. 18th, 1872. The latter located at Farngton in March, 1865. Mrs. Rogers was a sincere, christian woman, and greatly beloved by many friends. The funeral was held from the house on Tuesday, the Rev. O. V. Sinif officiating, with interment in Lake City.

According to the book "McNair, McNear, and McNeir Genealogies", Edwin Conway and his wife owned the Mason & Hamlin Piano Company (1923). The following is quoted from the website Greenline Wheels (http://www.greenlinewheels.com/poi/conway-grave) : Conway attended college intending to become a surgeon. He wed Sarah Rogers of Mauston, Wisconsin and they had three children. Quite by accident, Conway became involved with selling organs to farmers and was so successful that W.W. Kimball invited him to head Kimball's wholesale piano establishment in Chicago in 1875. Once settled, he became active in politics and served as president of the Cicero Town Board from 1883-1888. He later served on the Republican Central Committee in Cook County. Conway always remembered his early financial struggles and carried his lunch with him to the Kimball Piano Company office until he had $50,000 in the bank. He served as president of a railroad company, held top positions in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and became a leader in the Chicago Association of Commerce. He was also an early promoter of the first Historical Society in Oak Park, established in May 1898 but disbanded shortly afterwards. On his small gravestone is engraved "He loved his fellow men." He was a delegate to Republican National Convention from Illinois in 1896 and a Presidential Elector for Illinois in 1900.

Edwin S. Conway, the Secretary and Manager of the great W. W. Kimball Company of Chicago, is known as one of the best business men in the city. Mr. Conway is proud of the magnificent success which the house that he has so long managed has achieved. He is a guiding hand in one of the largest business enterprises in the West, its splendid instruments being favorably known almost throughout the civilized world. Mr. Conway is one of the most pronounced fac-
tors in Commercial Chicago ; he is a brainy man, who will brilliantly acquit himself in any position that he may assume. He is tactful, with an unusual endowment of good, common, practical sense. He has few equals and hardly a superior as an organizer of business, political and social courses. In the management of his vast business, in his political activity and as the head of social and fraternal organizations, he has been a power in directing toward the achievement of desired purposes. He is a man whose personality makes a deep impression and wins confidence.

Mr. Conway has always been a Republican and active in the campaigns of his party. But his activity in politics is the patriotism of a business man. He could have office if he desired it, but his political purpose is not of a selfish character. He believes that every citizen and business man should consider themselves important factors in popular government, and should perform active duty for the party of their choice. His loyalty to the Republic is evidenced by his loyalty to the doctrines of the Republican party, which he sincerely believes is the party that will perpetuate our beloved institutions. In all activities outside of his business, he is prompted by a public spirit, a sincere desire to promote the interests of the public. In accordance with this spirit he was for six years president of the Cicero Town Board, but after this long service concluded that he had done his duty in this respect, and resigned two years before the expiration of his term in order to give more attention to his business.

Mr. Conway is devoted to the principles of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and has given a large amount of time and energy to their advancement. He was a factor in the establishment of the Odd Fellows' Orphans' Home at
Lincoln, Ill., and no man has been more liberal in support of the Institutions controlled by the Order. He has been Grand Master of the State, serving during the World's Fair year. He is Grand Representative to the Sovereign Grand
Lodge serving from 1894 to date. He is a member of the Union League Club and was its Vice President ; and is also a member of Chicago Athletic Club.

Edwin S. Conway was married December 25, 1871, to Miss Sarah J. Rogers of Mauston, Wis., a very accomplished lady. They have three children, Earle E., now with the Kimball Company; and Carle C., who graduated from Yale
College in 1899, is also connected with the Kimball Company; and Sybil Sara. Mr. Conway resides in Oak Park, Ill., and has been intimately connected with the progress of that suburb for more than twenty-five years. He is a life trustee of the Scoville Institute of that town. Mr. Conway has been a member of the Republican State Central Committee and also of the Cook County Republican Central Committee. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention held in St. Louis, in 1896, and in 1900 was elected a presidential elector on the Republican ticket.

George S. Cotter, superintendent of the Springfield Water Works, was born at Springfield, Ohio, in 1862, and is a son of the late James L. Cotter, who was born in Ireland, emigrated to Canada when thirteen years of age, and came to Springfieln 1847, where the rest of his life was passed.
George S. Cotter attended school until he was thirteen years old and then entered the machine shops of Warder, Mitchell, and Company and remained until he had learned the trade. When he was eighteen years old, he went to Aurora, Illinois, andoked in the railroad shops at that city for three years, after which he returned to Springfield and continued work as a machinist until 1884, when he became engineer of the city water works at the pumping station. He continued in that capacity for ten years and for four years more was superintendent there. In 1898 he left the city's employ and accepted a position as foreman of the machine shops of the Warder-Bushnell Company. When the International Harvester Company came into possession, he became mechanical engineer for a time and then resigned to accept the superintendency of the city water works again, and has had charge of this important municipal utility ever since. He takes an interest in politics, but only to the extent of promoting good government.
In 1891, Mr. Cotter was married to Jennie Bryant, who died on October 16, 1906, leaving four children, namely: Paul Bryant, Helen, Ruth, and George, Jr. Mr. Cotter is a member of the Elks.
