James leased land at Pompey, Onondaga County, New York, in 1802, and settled there by 1804. The family settled at Wheeler's Hollow, Concord, Erie County, New York, in 1817, and they are listed there in the 1820 census. They purchased land in ERie County and paid school tuition for their children. James Russell and Lydia Brown were married by Rev. Adoniram Judson, father of the well-known early missionary, Adoniram Judson.
