    • Hunter Coghlan was a surgeon in the army from 1859-1880 and retired as a Brigade Surgeon. After the death of his wife, he changed his surname to Colan. Family tradition holds that he and his brother, Thomas (a surgeon in the Royal Navy who retired as Inspector General), were tired of the British mispronouncing their name.
