    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: shoemaker
    • Census: 1850, Plain Township, Franklin County, Ohio, USA
    • Census: 1860, Hale Township, Hardin County, Ohio, USA
    • Census: 1870, Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio, USA

    Notes:

Amos Kohn's family Bible lists a son named George, born on January 22, 1824, which is about a month earlier than the birthday implied in George Kohn's death record, which states that he was 47 years, 11 months, and 2 days old.

George Kohn was a member of the First Methodist Church, Kenton, Ohio, having been transferred by letter on 24 Sept 1865. He died of "lung fever." Both the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Hardin County, Ohio, give his birthplace as Virginia, but his death record gives his birthplace as what appears to be "Fairfield". The entry in the 1860 census of Hardin County, Ohio, includes George Coon (age 35, born Virginia), Hannah Coon (age 27, born Ohio), John Coon (age 6, born Ohio), Sally Coon (age 7, born Ohio), and Rachel Coon (age 2, born Ohio). The 1870 census of Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio, records the family as follows: John (sic) Kohn (age 45, born Virginia), Hannah Kohn (age 38, born Ohio), Rachel Kohn (age 10, born Ohio), William Kohn (age 8, born Ohio), Nancy Kohn (age 4, born Ohio), and Eliza Kohn (age 4, born Ohio). George's son, John David Kohn, was living with the nearby family of John Whitmore. George's mother may have been named Mary. There was a Mary Koons living with the Curtis Wilkin family in Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio, at the time of the 1870 census. She was 74 years old, and her birthplace is recorded as Virginia.

A George Khon (sic), age 38, born in Virginia, registered for the draft in 1862 in Boles Creek (Bokescreek) Township, Logan County, Ohio, just south of the Hardin County line.

The administrator of George Kohn's estate was John Wall. The last name is spelled Cone on the inventory, which included the following:
    one cookstove - $5.00
    cooking utensils - $20.00
bed and bedding (no value stated)
    household goods - $10.00
    2 pigs - $2.50
    patch of wheat - $9.60
    George owed the following amounts:
    George Woods - $4.25
    J.J. Ripley - $14.56
    Samuel Hawk - $3.12
    Jacob Woods - $8.55
He was reported to owe $175 in total and left "no personal estate". His land was sold and was identified as the northeast quarter of section 5, township 4, range 11, in the center of the Findlay Road. Named as heirs were his widow, Hannah, and children John, Rachel, William, Nancy, and Elisa. W.T. Cessna was appointed guardian, presumably of his minor children. The last name is spelled Kolen in the newspaper notice.

    Notes:

Hannah Russell was living with the James McCracken family in Perry Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, at the time of the 1850 Census.

    Died:
It is assumed that Hannah A. Russell Kohn died around 1855, since her husband, George Kohn, remarried in 1856. There are no divorce records in Hardin County, Ohio, before 1868.

    • Census: 1870, Springfield Township, Clark County, Ohio, USA

    Notes:

James L. Cotter emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1835 with his father, and he later settled in the Park Hill, Ontario, area. In the "History of Middlesex County," James is listed as a warden and pathmaster for the year 1845. He is recorded as having owned land in Middlesex County, Ontario. The land was in McGillivray Township, Lot 23, Concession 9, and was purchased on 17 Dec 1842. His brother, George, purchased the neighboring lot, No. 22, on the same day; their brother, John, purchased Lot No. 20 on 18 Mar 1844 . However, James Cotter is also listed on the 28 September 1837 map of McGillivray Township as owning that same lot number. James Cotter appears in the 1848 census of Canada West (Ontario). He is listed on page 3, McGillivray Township, Huron (now Middlesex) County. Around 1848, James Cotter moved to Clark County, Ohio. He filed a Declaration of Intention for Naturalization in Clark County, Ohio, on 20 March 1861, but apparently never completed the naturalization process. At the time of the 1850 census, James and Maria (name given as Mary in the census) were living in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. James' age was given as 26, and his occupation was sawyer. Maria's age was given as 25. At the time of the 1860 census, the family was living in German Township, Clark County, Ohio. Included in the census is Anna Cotter, aged 66. He is listed in the 1880 census of Clark County, Ohio. James Cotter was a member of The Champion City Guard, Company A, Seventh Infantry, Ohio National Guard, during the Civil War. He purchased land from William T. Haley in the city of Springfield, Ohio, on 13 July 1855, and from James T. Warder on 14 December 1870, in Springfield Township. Around 1881, the James Cotter family moved to Illinois, settling near Claremont in Richland County. James Cotter purchased land from Robert B. and Ellen Patrick in Richland County, on 27 November 1882. The property is described in the deed as the northwest fourth of the southeast quarter of Section 26, township 4, North Range (numbered 14 west), "containing 40 acres, more or less." The property was sold by his heirs to Mary Cotter Melrose, James's daughter, for $800 on 28 November 1902, following the death of James's second wife in August 1902. James is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, Ohio, in Lot 242 of Section L. This plot was purchased by Ann Cotter on 18 April 1899.

    Notes:

The Amos Kohn family moved to New Albany in Franklin County, Ohio, probably in 1831. Amos died in Franklin County (in or near New Albany, northeast of Columbus) in 1844, and his widow Rachel married George Welch on October 9, 1845. Though she was about 46, she had a child by him: Mahlon, born 1846 or 1847. In 1850 some of her Kohn children were living with her and her second husband, and the census-taker misidentifies them as Welches.

The Russell family was living in Goshen Township, Hardin County, Ohio, at the time of the 1850 census. The 1850 census says that James was born in Connecticut. By 1860, they were back in Muskingum County, living in Perry Township.

    Census:
The identity of Edwin McCracken is unknown.

James married Charlotte Baldwin on 6 Nov 1823 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA. Charlotte (daughter of Samuel B. Notes:

James and Charlotte Baldwin Russell were married by Dr. Francis Silver, who later served as the administrator of the estate of Charlotte's father, Samuel. Charlotte Baldwin Russell was received by letter at the Salt Creek Baptist Church in Muskingum County, Ohio, on 3 September 1840. She is also recorded as becoming a member by letter at the same church on 3 September 1842. She was "excluded" by the church on 2 December 1848. She may also be the Mrs. Russell who was baptized by the church on 2 October 1831 and dismissed on 2 August 1834. In 1880, she was living in Washington Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, with John and Matilda Mitchlett. In the 1900 census of Perry Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, Charlotte's son, Samuel, gave her birthplace as Virginia.

    Birth:
Charlotte's death record states that she was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, but the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses all say Virginia. However, the 1880 census says she was born in Ohio.

The name in the church record of the person baptized on this date is Mrs. Russell. Although not proven, it is likely that the record refers to Charlotte Baldwin Russell.

    Church Record:
The name in the church record of the person dismissed by the church on this date is Mrs. Russell. Although not proven, it is likely that the record refers to Charlotte Baldwin Russell.

    • Occupation: doctor
    • Military service: 1811-1829; Surgeon, West Meath Militia
    • Immigration: 1835, New York, USA

    Notes:

It is possible that Rogers Cotter was born in Kilmichael, County Cork, Ireland, since his father was Vicar there from 1784-1797. Rogers Cotter is identified in his 1810 marriage record as "Rogers Cotter of City of Dublin Esquire." He attended Trinity College, Cambridge (matriculated 1806, but did not graduate), and later graduated as a physician and surgeon from Trinity College, Dublin, and then the University of Edinburgh, on 1 August 1815. His dissertation was entitled "Dissertatio medica inauguralis de tympanita," and was published in Edinburgh in 1815. He entered the army as a surgeon's mate in the West Meath Militia on 26 March 1811. He was assistant surgeon from 1817 until 1829, when the regiment disbanded. He was also surgeon and physician of Balinacaryge Dispensary. He published "The Fables of Aesop, in Latin hexameter verse translated from the original Greek," in Dublin in 1833. Rogers Cotter and his family emigrated in 1835. They sailed on the ship Tallahassee, originating in Ireland, and departing ultimately from Liverpool. The ship arrived in New York on 8 July 1835. The following family members are on the passenger list: Rogers Cotter, no age given; Mrs. (?) Cotter, age 39; James L. Cotter, age 17; George L. Cotter, age 19; John R. Cotter, age 13; Lydia Cotter, age 15; Annabella M. Cotter, age 11, and; A. Cotter, age 1 (female). Upon their arrival, Rogers stated that his destination was Ohio. However, he went instead to Ontario, settling in Toronto Gore Township, Peel County, Ontario. There is no record to indicate that he ever went to the Park Hill, Ontario, area with his sons. On 28 September 1835, he applied to purchase Lot 12, Concession 10, of the Gore of Toronto (Clergy Reserves), but the lot was not for sale. He was described as a "Doctor of Medicine and Surgeon," and "lately arrived in this province with a numerous family." Rogers Cotter is listed in the 1837 census of Toronto, Gore Township, York County, as "Dr. Cotter," living at Concession 10, Lot 12, in the Gore of Toronto. On 9 July 1839, he applied to purchase the same lot, where he had been living as a lessee. Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1820, Perry Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA

    Notes:

This is probably the same Samuel Baldwin listed as a member of Class No. 9, 56th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Loudoun County Militia, Captain George Rust's Company, on 15 September 1794. In October 1794, the regiment was in western Pennsylvania active in suppressing the Whiskey Rebellion. About 20 years after that, George Rust purchased a plantation as part of the settlement of the estate of Peter Romine, possibly the grandfather of Samuel Baldwin's wife. Samuel and Hannah Baldwin moved to Ohio from Loudoun County, Virginia, sometime between 1807, when their daughter Charlotte was born, and 1809, when Samuel signed a deed in Belmont County. On 30 May 1809, Samuel purchased 80 acres of land in Muskingum County from James Johnston of Steubenville, for $400. He is listed on the 1814 tax list of Muskingum County, Ohio. When he died intestate in 1830, the land passed to his children. By 1857, his son James had bought out the other heirs and owned the farm. Several of his children gave Samuel's place of birth as Virginia, rather than Pennsylvania, in the 1880 census.

Samuel married Hannah Romine in cir 1804. Hannah (daughter of Peter Romine and Ruth Burson) was born on 23 Apr 1785 in Virginia, USA; was christened in Aug 1816 in Salt Creek Baptist Church, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; died on 27 Mar 1858 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; was buried in Salt Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA. Other Events and Attributes:

    • Relationship not proven: The people listed as Hannah's siblings were definitely siblings of each other, but there is no proof yet that they are also Hannah's siblings.
    • Relationship to parents not proven: There is indirect evidence only that Hannah's maiden name was Romine. If so, Peter Romine and Ruth Burson may have been her parents.

"Cotter, George Sackville (1755-1831), poet and translator, was the fourth son of Sir James Cotter. He was educated at Westminster School, of which he was captain in 1770, and in 1771 he was elected to St. Peter's College, Cambridge. He graduated B.A. in 1775 and M.A. in 1779. Having taken holy orders he became vicar of Kilmacdonough, and rector of Kilcreddan-Garrivoe and Ightermorragh, diocese of Cloyne. In 1788 he published two volumes of 'Poems,' dedicated to Lady Shannon, and consisting of a poem in two books, entitled 'Prospects,' and a collection of odes and other fugitive pieces. In 1826 he published a translation of Terence for the use of the schools, in the preface to which he states that when at Westminster School he had been an actor in three of Terence's comedies. In the following year he printed seven of the plays of Plautus, 'translated literally and grammatically, and cleared of objectionable passages.' The later years of his life were spent at Youghal, Cork, and he died in 1831. By his wife, a daughter of Bayly Rogers, physician and banker of Cork, he left, with other issue, four sons."

George Sackville Cotter was named after Lord George Sackville, a friend of his father's, and was known as "a great musician." His translations of the comedies of Plautus was "Plauti Comoediae septem selectae; Anglice redditae, expurgatae." The comedies are Aulularia, Epidicus, Menaechmi, Mercator, Pseudolus, Trinummus, and Rudens. The book was published by J. F. Dove, London, in 1827. The poems dedicated to Lady Shannon were published by William Flynn, Cork, in 1788. The full title is "Poems, consisting of odes, songs, pastorals, satyrs, &c, and a descriptive poem in four books, called Prospects." His translations of the comedies of Terence was "Four Comedies of Terence, translated, and the stage management and mode of acting them set down, as they were acted at Westminster School; and also the other two comedies of Terence, the Heautotimorumenos and the Hecyra..." It was published by Dodges and M'Arthur, Dublin, in 1824. 5. 44.  John Baldwin was born in cir 1740 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA (son of Joseph Baldwin and Ann Tomlinson); died in cir 1806 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

A John Baldwin was listed on the tax list of Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1761. He was single and identified as living at "Watson's." He appeared again as a single man on the tax list for 1762. The Watson referred to in the tax list was probably John Watson (1703-1764), who moved from Bristol to Middletown Township, in 1734. John Watson had a brother, Mark (1698-1749), who had married Ann Sotcher, an aunt of Mercy Sotcher Baldwin. John Baldwin may have been introduced to his future wife while working for John Watson. A John Baldwin was listed on the 1764 tax list of Lower Makefield Township, Bucks County. This could have been the same John Baldwin, after his marriage and after the death of his employer, John Watson. This was the last mention of this John Baldwin in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John Baldwin first appeared in Loudoun County, Virginia, records in 1769, when his name appeared on the list of Loudoun County Tithables. He appeared on the list again in 1770, 1773, 1774, 1781, and 1785.

Signed Peter Romine in the presence of Joseph Read, Edward B. Grady, Jonathan Warters.
At a Court held for Loudoun County Dec. 8th, 1800 This Mortgage was proved by the oaths of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.

John Baldwin is listed on the Loudoun County Tax List of 1785 and in a Loudoun County court record of 1793.

John married Mercy Sotcher on 4 Apr 1763 in Dutch Reformed Church, Churchville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA. Mercy (daughter of Robert Sotcher and Mercy Brown) was born in cir 1740 in Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 7 Jun 1819 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 45.  Mercy Sotcher was born in cir 1740 in Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA (daughter of Robert Sotcher and Mercy Brown); died on 7 Jun 1819 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

Mercy Sotcher Baldwin was disowned by the Falls Monthly Meeting of Friends on 7 July 1763, for marrying out of unity. One source gives her birth date as 22 Dec 1732, but most sources say she was born cir 1740.

    Children:
    1. Phebe Baldwin was born in cir 1762 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA; died between 1819-1835 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.
    2. John Baldwin was born in cir 1764 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA; died in cir 1825 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.
    3. 22. Samuel B. Baldwin was born in cir 1766 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 1 Mar 1830 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; was buried in Salt Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA.
    4. Mary Ann Baldwin was born in cir 1770 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA.
    5. Stacey Baldwin was born in cir 1774 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.
    6. Mahlon Baldwin was born in cir 1776 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 1 Jan 1834 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.
    7. James Baldwin was born in cir 1777 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA; died in 1847 in Grafton, Taylor County, West Virginia, USA.
    8. Joseph Baldwin was born in cir 1778 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA; died in cir 1815 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.

  7. 46.  Peter Romine was born in cir 1750 (son of Peter Romine and Abigail ?); died in cir 1824 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Relationship not proven: There is indirect evidence only that Peter Romine and Ruth Burson are the parents of the listed children.

    Notes:

Peter Romine was involved in a lawsuit in Loudoun County, Virgina, USA (see https://bryan-martin.net/genealogy/showmedia.php?mediaID=4496&medialinkID=4303) which mentions that as executor of his father's estate he had Elias Kent, possibly his son-in-law, and Christopher Snyder inhabit the plantation of his father, Peter Romine.

Peter Romine appears on Loudoun County, Virginia, USA, tax lists for 1804, 1805, 1806, 1807, 1809, 1810, 1811, and 1812, but not thereafter, so he may have moved away from Loudoun County around 1812. There is a Peter Romine on the 1835 tax list, but this may be a different Peter Romine.

    Died:
There is indirect evidence only that links this death date and the estate record below to the Peter Romine who married Ruth Burson. It is difficult to know when he died. His estate record contains an undated receipt from Samuel Baldwin stating that he received payment for boarding Peter Romine for 2 years and 4 months. Since he began caring for Peter in December 1821, then Peter's death probably occurred in March or April 1824. Another document in the estate record states that Samuel Baldwin was to be paid $1.50 per day for boarding Peter "continued til April the 18th 1824", so Peter may have died on that day. Another receipt in the estate record is from James Taylor for "burying clothes", and that receipt is dated March 1824. However, there is another receipt in the estate record from Benjamin Williams for "six dollars for a coffin". The date of that receipt seems to read "November the 13th 1822".

Peter married Ruth Burson on 27 Feb 1768 in Virginia, USA. Ruth (daughter of George Burson and Sarah Cox) was born in cir 1745. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 47.  Ruth Burson was born in cir 1745 (daughter of George Burson and Sarah Cox).

    Other Events and Attributes:
