Generation: 2

  1. 2.  John Browne was born on 2 Dec 1682 in Reading, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA (son of John Browne and Sarah ?); died on 12 Apr 1768 in Killingly, Windham County, Connecticut, USA.

    Notes:

John Browne moved from Reading to Weston, Massachusetts, then to Killingly, Connecticut in 1711. Killingly land records, vol. 1, p. 135, show Abiel Lamb selling property to John Brown(e) on 13 December 1718: two parcels, for £170: one hundred acres with house and other buildings, "bounded southerly by Deacon Aleazer Bateman, easterly by beaver swamp, northerly by John Grover, westerly by horse hill," and another 47 acres on Horse or Chestnut Hill, "bounded south by Stephen Grover, east by Deacon Eleazer Bateman and Joseph Coorl, north by Thomas Grover, west on common land." Witnesses were Samuel Winter, David Church (town clerk), and Mary Church. These parcels are in eastern Killingly. The "Oldest Killingly Burial Ground" is in Putnam, on old Killingly Road, the first path cut through this region. There may be Browns there; other Browns are certainly in the Baptist Grave Yard. There is some question as to whether John Brown(e) was married a second time, to Mary, and if the John Brown born in 1728 is his son.

    Notes:

John Browne was an early settler of Reading, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was admitted as a freeman in 1679. He probably lived on Cowdrey Hill, where there is a Brown's Pond. The town records sometimes call him "John Brown-upon- the-hill," as there was another John Brown in Reading. He was a prominent citizen and a selectman. His will is dated 18 May 1709, and probated 23 Aug 1714. It mentions six of his children: Nathaniel and John, Hannah Parker, Martha Harrington, Mary Browne, and Elizabeth Hazelton. He left John "five shillings and no more and the reason why is because he is a stubborne, disobedient child -- a rebellious son to me."

John married Sarah ? on 14 Nov 1681. Sarah was born in cir 1660. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
