    James Russell served in the War of 1812 as a private in Captain Ezra Nott's Company and Captain Frederick Richmond's Company in the New York Militia. By 1860, they were back in Muskingum County, living in Perry Township.

    James and Charlotte Baldwin Russell were married by Dr. Francis Silver, who later served as the administrator of the estate of Charlotte's father, Samuel. Charlotte Baldwin Russell was received by letter at the Salt Creek Baptist Church in Muskingum County, Ohio, on 3 September 1840. She is also recorded as becoming a member by letter at the same church on 3 September 1842. She was "excluded" by the church on 2 December 1848. She may also be the Mrs. Russell who was baptized by the church on 2 October 1831 and dismissed on 2 August 1834. In 1880, she was living in Washington Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, with John and Matilda Mitchlett. In the 1900 census of Perry Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, Charlotte's son, Samuel, gave her birthplace as Virginia.

    Charlotte's death record states that she was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, but the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses all say Virginia. However, the 1880 census says she was born in Ohio.
