At the time of the 1850 Census, the McCracken family was living in Perry Township, Muskingum County. About 1853, they moved to Illinois. By the time of the 1870 Census, they were living in Knoxville, Knox County, Illinois. James McCracken was listed as township assessor in that year. He probably served in the 138th Infantry during the Civil War. Sarah was still living in Knoxville in 1897, when she was mentioned in the estate records of her brother, James.

James married Sarah Jane Baldwin on 12 May 1842 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA. Sarah (daughter of Samuel B. Baldwin and Hannah Romine) was born on 22 Aug 1822 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; died on 4 Jan 1914 in Knox County, Illinois, USA; was buried on 6 Jan 1914 in City of Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox County, Illinois, USA. Sarah Baldwin McCracken was living in Knox County, Illinois, at the time of the 1900 census. Living with her were her daughters, Eliza and Bessie, and Mary L. Sanburn, age 19 (born February 1881), identified as Sarah's granddaughter.

After the death of Sarah's father, Samuel Baldwin, in 1830, Adam Shoemaker was appointed guardian of his minor children. Sarah was reported to be 9 years old on 14 Aug 1830.

This is probably the same Samuel Baldwin listed as a member of Class No. 9, 56th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Loudoun County Militia, Captain George Rust's Company, on 15 September 1794. In October 1794, the regiment was in western Pennsylvania active in suppressing the Whiskey Rebellion. About 20 years after that, George Rust purchased a plantation as part of the settlement of the estate of Peter Romine, possibly the grandfather of Samuel Baldwin's wife. Samuel and Hannah Baldwin moved to Ohio from Loudoun County, Virginia, sometime between 1807, when their daughter Charlotte was born, and 1809, when Samuel signed a deed in Belmont County. On 30 May 1809, Samuel purchased 80 acres of land in Muskingum County from James Johnston of Steubenville, for $400. He is listed on the 1814 tax list of Muskingum County, Ohio. When he died intestate in 1830, the land passed to his children. By 1857, his son James had bought out the other heirs and owned the farm. Several of his children gave Samuel's place of birth as Virginia, rather than Pennsylvania, in the 1880 census.

Samuel married Hannah Romine in cir 1804. Hannah (daughter of Peter Romine and Ruth Burson) was born on 23 Apr 1785 in Virginia, USA; was christened in Aug 1816 in Salt Creek Baptist Church, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; died on 27 Mar 1858 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; was buried in Salt Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA. A John Baldwin was listed on the tax list of Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1761. He was single and identified as living at "Watson's." He appeared again as a single man on the tax list for 1762. The Watson referred to in the tax list was probably John Watson (1703-1764), who moved from Bristol to Middletown Township, in 1734. John Watson had a brother, Mark (1698-1749), who had married Ann Sotcher, an aunt of Mercy Sotcher Baldwin. John Baldwin may have been introduced to his future wife while working for John Watson. A John Baldwin was listed on the 1764 tax list of Lower Makefield Township, Bucks County. This could have been the same John Baldwin, after his marriage and after the death of his employer, John Watson. This was the last mention of this John Baldwin in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John Baldwin first appeared in Loudoun County, Virginia, records in 1769, when his name appeared on the list of Loudoun County Tithables. He appeared on the list again in 1770, 1773, 1774, 1781, and 1785.

This indenture made this 20th day of November, 1800, between Peter Romine and James Grady in consideration of sum of $400 paid by said James Grady to the said Peter Romine a parcel of land now in the tenure and occupation of John Baldwin adjoining the land of Thomas Hereford, Samuel Talbott, James Dillon and Spencer Pew containing 140-3/4 acres * * * if Peter Romine, his heirs, Executors or Administrators shall, will and truly pay, or cause to be paid unto the said James Grady, his heirs or assigns the sum of $400 with lawful interest thereon in the space of two years from the date of these presents that then and in that case the said Peter Romine, his heirs, etc. may reenter the premises and enjoy the fee simple estate thereof in the same manner as if this Deed had never been made anything contained herein to the contrary notwithstanding. Signed Peter Romine in the presence of Joseph Read, Edward B. Grady, Jonathan Warters.
At a Court held for Loudoun County Dec. 8th, 1800 This Mortgage was proved by the oaths of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.

John Baldwin is listed on the Loudoun County Tax List of 1785 and in a Loudoun County court record of 1793.

John married Mercy Sotcher on 4 Apr 1763 in Dutch Reformed Church, Churchville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA. Mercy (daughter of Robert Sotcher and Mercy Brown) was born in cir 1740 in Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 7 Jun 1819 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA. Mercy Sotcher Baldwin was disowned by the Falls Monthly Meeting of Friends on 7 July 1763, for marrying out of unity. One source gives her birth date as 22 Dec 1732, but most sources say she was born cir 1740.

Notes:

Peter Romine was involved in a lawsuit in Loudoun County, Virgina, USA (see https://bryan-martin.net/genealogy/showmedia.php?mediaID=4496&medialinkID=4303) which mentions that as executor of his father's estate he had Elias Kent, possibly his son-in-law, and Christopher Snyder inhabit the plantation of his father, Peter Romine.

Peter Romine appears on Loudoun County, Virginia, USA, tax lists for 1804, 1805, 1806, 1807, 1809, 1810, 1811, and 1812, but not thereafter, so he may have moved away from Loudoun County around 1812. There is a Peter Romine on the 1835 tax list, but this may be a different Peter Romine.

Died:
There is indirect evidence only that links this death date and the estate record below to the Peter Romine who married Ruth Burson. It is difficult to know when he died. His estate record contains an undated receipt from Samuel Baldwin stating that he received payment for boarding Peter Romine for 2 years and 4 months. Since he began caring for Peter in December 1821, then Peter's death probably occurred in March or April 1824. Another document in the estate record states that Samuel Baldwin was to be paid $1.50 per day for boarding Peter "continued til April the 18th 1824", so Peter may have died on that day. Another receipt in the estate record is from James Taylor for "burying clothes", and that receipt is dated March 1824. However, there is another receipt in the estate record from Benjamin Williams for "six dollars for a coffin". The date of that receipt seems to read "November the 13th 1822".

Peter married Ruth Burson on 27 Feb 1768 in Virginia, USA. Ruth (daughter of George Burson and Sarah Cox) was born in cir 1745. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
