    At the time of their marriage, Alexander Benvie was living at Swinton, and Isabella Lumsden was living at Middleton, Gorebrdige, Edinburgh. They were married "according to the forms of the Church of Scotland." They were married by Walter Waddell, Minister of the Parish of Borthwick, and the witnesses were James Benvie and Bessie Lumsden. At the time of the 1901 census, they were living at Cassillis Gardens, Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, Scotland. Alexander sailed from Glasgow on the S.S. Caledonia on 23 April 1910 and arrived in New York on 2 May. He stated that his intended destination was St. Louis, Missouri. He gave his wife's address as 51 Kyle Street, Ayr, and his occupation as gardener.

At the time of the 1901 census, the William Benvie family was living at "Gardners House," in the parish of Errol, Perthshire. This may have been a house on an estate. Listed were William (age 49 - market gardner), Margaret (age 50), James (age 29 - gardner), Jane (age 21), Mary (age 16 - dairymaid), George (age 15 - "carr boy"), Anne (age 12 - scholar), Charles (age 9 - scholar), and Kate (age 6 - scholar). The census gives William's birthplace as Kinfauns, Perthshire.

    Alexander Duff was listed as a farm servant at Ross, parish of Errol, Perthshire, on his marriage record, and his wife was a resident of Kinfauns. They were married by the Rev. David Black, minister of Kilspindie, at the parish manse. At the time of the 1841 census, both Alexander Duff and Catherine Edward were farm servants at Pitrodie Farm, in the parish of Kilspindie. Alexander's age was given as 17, and Catherine's as 20. At the time of the 1861 census (which gives his birthplace as Kinfauns), the family was living at Muirloch Cottages, parish of Fowlis-Easter, Perthshire, and Alexander's occupation was given as a ploughman. In 1871, the family was living on the Camperdown estate near Lochee, where Alexander was an estate laborer. He is listed on the property valuation rolls of 1871/2, appearing for the last time on the 1897/8 rolls. The property, owned by the Earl of Camperdown, was the cottage on Butter's Loan. At the time of the 1881 census, they were living at Butters Loan Cottage, Liff and Benvie, Lochee, and Alexander was again listed as an estate laborer. Living with Alexander and Catherine Duff were their children; James (railway laborer), Helen (jute factory worker), and Elizabeth (jute factory worker), and his mother, Jessie (Janet Will) Duff. In his death entry, he was described as a woodworkman. The information was given by his son, James Duff, of Wemyss Castle, Fife. In the marriage records of his daughter Elizabeth (1882) and his son Robert (1876), his occupation was given as forester.
