    Happy 100th Birthday November 14th to Hester B. Brown! Mrs. Brown resides at Grand Villa Assisted Care, 1501 Patterson Road with her husband, Roy C. Brown. She was born Hester Wooden in 1909 in Kent, Indiana. On November 19, 1927, she married Robert D. MacGruder of Indianapolis. The two had three children: Dede Hunter (Bella Vista, Arkansas), Robert W. MacGruder (Grand Junction) and Marilyn Barnewall (Palisade). She has six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

    The family moved to Denver from Indianapolis in 1939. Hester was often the top saleswoman in the Rocky Mountain region for the Singer Sewing Machine Company. She married Roy C. Brown, December 9, 1960 and the two will celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary next month! Hester and Roy moved to Grand Junction in January 2006.

    Hester will celebrate her birthday by enjoying cake, spareribs from Rooster's, and the good company of her son, daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with many friends at Grand Villa.     William Z. Magruder enlisted in the United States Army in Clinton County, Ohio, and served as a private in Company B, 40th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged on 7 November 1862, at Camp Dennison, Ohio, on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. His service record describes him as 5'11" tall, with dark hair and eyes, and a fair complexion. He was a moulder, and died in a coal mine accident. After the death of William, his family lived in several places. In 1880, they were living in Xenia Township, Greene County, Ohio; in 1887 and 1888 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio, and; in 1890 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, at 548 E. Main Street.

    William married Mary Isabela Caldwell on 1 Jan 1865 in Portland, Jefferson County, Ohio, USA.     John W. Magruder was probably born in Allegany County, Maryland. The place of his marriage to Margaret Porter is not known, but it could have taken place either in Brooke County, (West) Virginia, or in Allegany County, Maryland. John W. and Margaret Porter Magruder are buried in the Milledgeville-Plymouth Cemetery near Milledgeville, Fayette County, Ohio. The John W. Magruder family was living in Allegany County, Maryland, in 1830. By 1840, they had moved to (West) Virginia and settled in Brooke County. They moved to Ohio County, (West) Virginia, by 1850, and lived there until about 1870, when they moved to Clinton County, Ohio. After two or three years in Clinton County, they moved to Fayette County, and settled near Milledgeville.

    John W. Magruder appears in a list of names in the (Wheeling, West Virginia) Daily Intelligencer of April 25, 1860. The list appears to be a list of voters who are being asked to attend a meeting in Wheeling on May 2, 1860, to elect delegates to the Republican national convention.
