He was self-employed in the radiator business and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 79 and Disabled American Veterans Odessa. Survivors include four daughters, Patricia O'Connor, Palmetto, Cecelia Reid, Odessa, Dianne Horn, Tampa, and Nadine Cuyler, Wimauma; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Living with the family was his father-in-law, David Lewis, and his brother-in-law, David Lewis. After the divorce of John Garrett Magruder and Martha Hall, she moved to Boulder, Colorado, where she married Andrew L. Wing. At the time of the 1920 Census, the family was living at 1245 Warder Street, Springfield, Ohio. John Garrett and Hannah Lewis Magruder both died at the home of John's daughter, Della Magruder Pettit, at 1107 Kenton Street, Springfield, Ohio, within two days of each other. John Garrett Magruder was a helper at Robbins and Myers Company in Springfield, Ohio.

    John W. Magruder was probably born in Allegany County, Maryland. The place of his marriage to Margaret Porter is not known, but it could have taken place either in Brooke County, (West) Virginia, or in Allegany County, Maryland. John W. and Margaret Porter Magruder are buried in the Milledgeville-Plymouth Cemetery near Milledgeville, Fayette County, Ohio. The John W. Magruder family was living in Allegany County, Maryland, in 1830. By 1840, they had moved to (West) Virginia and settled in Brooke County. They moved to Ohio County, (West) Virginia, by 1850, and lived there until about 1870, when they moved to Clinton County, Ohio. After two or three years in Clinton County, they moved to Fayette County, and settled near Milledgeville.

    John W. Magruder appears in a list of names in the (Wheeling, West Virginia) Daily Intelligencer of April 25, 1860. The list appears to be a list of voters who are being asked to attend a meeting in Wheeling on May 2, 1860, to elect delegates to the Republican national convention.

Zachariah was living in Allegany County, Maryland, at the time of the 1830 census. Although only four children are known, according to census records there must have been at least three others. Zachariah and Ann Dawson Magruder were married by the Rev. William Shaw, a Deacon of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Allegany County, Maryland.
