Generation: 4

  1. 14.  Samuel B. Baldwin was born in cir 1766 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA (son of John Baldwin and Mercy Sotcher); died on 1 Mar 1830 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; was buried in Salt Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Military service: 15 Sep 1794, Loudoun County, Virginia, USA; Samuel Baldwin was on the roster of the 2nd Battalion, 56th Regiment Militia, Captain George Rust's Company (Militia Book, page 26).
    • Census: 1820, Perry Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA

    Notes:

This is probably the same Samuel Baldwin listed as a member of Class No. 9, 56th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Loudoun County Militia, Captain George Rust's Company, on 15 September 1794. In October 1794, the regiment was in western Pennsylvania active in suppressing the Whiskey Rebellion. About 20 years after that, George Rust purchased a plantation as part of the settlement of the estate of Peter Romine, possibly the grandfather of Samuel Baldwin's wife. Samuel and Hannah Baldwin moved to Ohio from Loudoun County, Virginia, sometime between 1807, when their daughter Charlotte was born, and 1809, when Samuel signed a deed in Belmont County. On 30 May 1809, Samuel purchased 80 acres of land in Muskingum County from James Johnston of Steubenville, for $400. He is listed on the 1814 tax list of Muskingum County, Ohio. When he died intestate in 1830, the land passed to his children. By 1857, his son James had bought out the other heirs and owned the farm. Several of his children gave Samuel's place of birth as Virginia, rather than Pennsylvania, in the 1880 census.

Samuel married Hannah Romine in cir 1804. Hannah (daughter of Peter Romine and Ruth Burson) was born on 23 Apr 1785 in Virginia, USA; was christened in Aug 1816 in Salt Creek Baptist Church, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; died on 27 Mar 1858 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; was buried in Salt Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Relationship to parents not proven: There is indirect but convincing evidence only that Hannah's maiden name was Romine. If so, Peter Romine and Ruth Burson may have been her parents.
    • Census: 1850, Perry Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA

    Children:
    1. Lydia Baldwin was born in cir 1805 in Pennsylvania, USA; was christened on 3 Jul 1813 in Salt Creek Baptist Church, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA.

    11. Joseph Baldwin was born in cir 1826 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA.

Generation: 5

  1. 28.  John Baldwin was born in cir 1740 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA (son of Joseph Baldwin and Ann Tomlinson); died in cir 1806 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

A John Baldwin was listed on the tax list of Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1761. He was single and identified as living at "Watson's." He appeared again as a single man on the tax list for 1762. The Watson referred to in the tax list was probably John Watson (1703-1764), who moved from Bristol to Middletown Township, in 1734. John Watson had a brother, Mark (1698-1749), who had married Ann Sotcher, an aunt of Mercy Sotcher Baldwin. John Baldwin may have been introduced to his future wife while working for John Watson. A John Baldwin was listed on the 1764 tax list of Lower Makefield Township, Bucks County. This could have been the same John Baldwin, after his marriage and after the death of his employer, John Watson. This was the last mention of this John Baldwin in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John Baldwin first appeared in Loudoun County, Virginia, records in 1769, when his name appeared on the list of Loudoun County Tithables. He appeared on the list again in 1770, 1773, 1774, 1781, and 1785.

    Loudoun County, Virginia, Deeds:
2A P. 213 Mort. This indenture made this 20th day of November, 1800, between Peter Romine and James Grady in consideration of sum of $400 paid by said James Grady to the said Peter Romine a parcel of land now in the tenure and occupation of John Baldwin adjoining the land of Thomas Hereford, Samuel Talbott, James Dillon and Spencer Pew containing 140-3/4 acres * * * if Peter Romine, his heirs, Executors or Administrators shall, will and truly pay, or cause to be paid unto the said James Grady, his heirs or assigns the sum of $400 with lawful interest thereon in the space of two years from the date of these presents that then and in that case the said Peter Romine, his heirs, etc. may reenter the premises and enjoy the fee simple estate thereof in the same manner as if this Deed had never been made anything contained herein to the contrary notwithstanding. Signed Peter Romine in the presence of Joseph Read, Edward B. Grady, Jonathan Warters.
At a Court held for Loudoun County Dec. 8th, 1800 This Mortgage was proved by the oaths of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.

John Baldwin is listed on the Loudoun County Tax List of 1785 and in a Loudoun County court record of 1793.

John married Mercy Sotcher on 4 Apr 1763 in Dutch Reformed Church, Churchville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA. Mercy (daughter of Robert Sotcher and Mercy Brown) was born in cir 1740 in Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 7 Jun 1819 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 29.  Mercy Sotcher was born in cir 1740 in Falls Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA (daughter of Robert Sotcher and Mercy Brown); died on 7 Jun 1819 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

Mercy Sotcher Baldwin was disowned by the Falls Monthly Meeting of Friends on 7 July 1763, for marrying out of unity. One source gives her birth date as 22 Dec 1732, but most sources say she was born cir 1740.

    Children:
    1. Phebe Baldwin was born in cir 1762 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA; died between 1819-1835 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.
    2. John Baldwin was born in cir 1764 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA; died in cir 1825 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.
    3. 14. Samuel B. Baldwin was born in cir 1766 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 1 Mar 1830 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA; was buried in Salt Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Smith Mill, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA.
    4. Mary Ann Baldwin was born in cir 1770 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA.
    5. Stacey Baldwin was born in cir 1774 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.
    6. Mahlon Baldwin was born in cir 1776 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 1 Jan 1834 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.
    7. James Baldwin was born in cir 1777 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA; died in 1847 in Grafton, Taylor County, West Virginia, USA.
    8. Joseph Baldwin was born in cir 1778 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA; died in cir 1815 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.

  3. 30.  Peter Romine was born in cir 1750 (son of Peter Romine and Abigail ?); died in cir 1824 in Muskingum County, Ohio, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Relationship not proven: There is indirect evidence only that Peter Romine and Ruth Burson are the parents of the listed children.
    • Deed: 25 Dec 1787, Loudoun County, Virginia, USA; Recorded in Deed Book R, page 012: Peter and Abigail Romine conveyed 150 acres of land to their son, Peter, through a "lease/release" agreement. Lease and release was a mode of conveyance of freehold estates for tax avoidance and speed. Between its parties it achieves the same outcome as a deed of grant/transfer/conveyance.

    Notes:

Peter Romine was involved in a lawsuit in Loudoun County, Virgina, USA (see https://bryan-martin.net/genealogy/showmedia.php?mediaID=4496&medialinkID=4303) which mentions that as executor of his father's estate he had Elias Kent, possibly his son-in-law, and Christopher Snyder inhabit the plantation of his father, Peter Romine.

Peter Romine appears on Loudoun County, Virginia, USA, tax lists for 1804, 1805, 1806, 1807, 1809, 1810, 1811, and 1812, but not thereafter, so he may have moved away from Loudoun County around 1812. There is a Peter Romine on the 1835 tax list, but this may be a different Peter Romine.

    Name:
There are many men named Peter in the various records concerning the Romine family, which has contributed to a great deal of uncertainty about which records pertain to which Peter. Therefore, it is possible that not all of the information on this page actually refers to the same person. However, there definitely was a Peter Romine in the Muskingum County, Ohio, 1820 census, and he is most likely the same Peter who was put into the care of Samuel Baldwin in late 1821. The ages of the people in the households of the Peter Romine in the 1810 Loudoun County, Virginia, census and the Peter Romine in the 1820 Muskingum County, Ohio, census, provide strong evidence that the two records refer to the same Peter Romine, but this is still not proof. If they are the same person, then most of the information on this page does interconnect. This document details the circumstantial evidence that the two Peter Romines were the same person and the father of Hannah Baldwin, wife of Samuel Baldwin.

    Died:
There is indirect evidence only that links this death date and the estate record below to the Peter Romine who married Ruth Burson. It is difficult to know when he died. His estate record contains an undated receipt from Samuel Baldwin stating that he received payment for boarding Peter Romine for 2 years and 4 months. Since he began caring for Peter in December 1821, then Peter's death probably occurred in March or April 1824. Another document in the estate record states that Samuel Baldwin was to be paid $1.50 per day for boarding Peter "continued til April the 18th 1824", so Peter may have died on that day. Another receipt in the estate record is from James Taylor for "burying clothes", and that receipt is dated March 1824. However, there is another receipt in the estate record from Benjamin Williams for "six dollars for a coffin". The date of that receipt seems to read "November the 13th 1822".

Peter married Ruth Burson on 27 Feb 1768 in Virginia, USA. Ruth (daughter of George Burson and Sarah Cox) was born in cir 1745. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 31.  Ruth Burson was born in cir 1745 (daughter of George Burson and Sarah Cox).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Relationship not proven: There is indirect evidence only that Peter Romine and Ruth Burson are the parents of the listed children.

    Notes:

On 27 February 1768, Ruth Burson was reported married out of unity at the Fairfax (Virginia) Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. On 28 May 1768, she was disowned.

    Notes:

The children listed for this family were likely siblings or very close relatives of each other, but there is no direct evidence that their parents were Peter Romine and Ruth Burson.

    Children:
    1. Abigail Romine was born on 19 Mar 1776; died on 7 Mar 1863; was buried in Duncan Falls, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA.

Generation: 6

  1. 56.  Joseph Baldwin was born in cir 1701 in Makefield Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA (son of John Baldwin and Sarah Allen); died after 1773 in Loudoun County, Virginia, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Cooper

    Notes:

In 1729, Joseph Baldwin was condemned by the Falls Monthly Meeting, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, for "marriage out of unity." He were later reinstated. On 17 September 1730, Joseph Baldwin was appointed constable of Bristol for a term of one year. Joseph Baldwin was originally from Bristol, Pennsylvania, but moved from there in 1734, first to Philadelphia and then to Marple Township, Chester County. He moved from Chester County, Pennsylvania, to Loudoun County, Virginia, with his wife, Ann, (sometimes called Susannah), by 1773. On 19 April 1773, he purchased 200 acres of land in Loudoun County from James and Rachel Maris of Newtown Township, Chester County. This land was probably at the site of present-day Hamilton, Virginia. His name appeared on the county's list of tithables 1773, 1774, 1775, 1777, 1778, and 1783. In September 1786, Joseph and his wife sold 43 acres of their land to a neighbor, George Tavenner, and in April 1793, they sold two more parcels to George Tavenner. Finally, on 7 September 1793, they sold the remaining 148 acres of land to Stacey Janney. On the same date, they purchased from Stacey Janney a tract of 161 acres in the southwest corner of Loudoun County. They sold this parcel about a year later and purchased 67 acres from William and Dinah Hand, located partly in Frederick County and partly in Shenandoah County. The county boundaries were redrawn, putting all of the land in Shenandoah County. The land lay near Front Royal, and when Warren County was formed from Shenandoah County in 1836, the land was in the new county. While residents of Loudoun County, the Baldwins were apparently connected with Ketocton Baptist Church. The records show an entry in May 1794 in which the clerk was directed to "give a letter of dismission to Sister Baldwin, at her request." This would have coincided with the family's move to Shenandoah County, but it is not clear who "Sister Baldwin" was. She could have been the wife of either Joseph Baldwin, Sr., or Joseph Baldwin, Jr.

Joseph married Ann Tomlinson in 1729 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA. Ann was born in cir 1705. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Church records in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, state that Peter and Abigail removed to Loudoun County, Virginia, in the 1750s. Other Romines in Hunterdon County at that time were Christoffel and James. James's wife's name was Sarah, and they were the parents of Mary and Furman Romine. Peter and Abigail Romine donated the land for Katoctin Baptist Church in Loudoun County, Virginia.

    Probate:
Peter Romine's will was written on 20 February 1787. The court ordered the inventory and appraisal in April 1788, and those were returned on 21 April 1788.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Probate: 9 Oct 1786

    Notes:

In July 1740 George Burson was given a 'certificate of removal' by the Gwynnedd Meeting. This is probably when he moved to Loudoun County, though the document does not say where he was going.
