Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Vivien Jean was born in 1648; was christened on 17 Oct 1648 (son of Vivien Jean and Suzanne Herault).

    Notes:

Vivien was the third of Vivien's sons to marry. In 1669, presumably just before his departure for Canada, his marriage contract with Anne Trollet was annulled. Two years later, on 29 November 1771, he was married in Québec City to Catherine Gateau, a King's girl from the parish of Saint-Médard in Paris. The 20-year-old bride seems to have hesitated in her choice of a husband. On 11 October 1671, she had signed a marriage contract with Abraham Albert; the contract was annulled. On the following 2 November, there was the contract with Vivien Jean. It was also annulled but the parties changed their minds and validated it 17 days later. In his history of the King's girls, Sylvio Dumas wrote that the girl had a marriage portion worth 300 pounds as well as the King's dowry of 50 pounds. The couple had six boys and three girls. The younger ones were born at Champlain.

Vivien married Catherine Gateau on 29 Nov 1671 in Québec, Canada. Catherine was born in cir 1650. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

The Vivien Jean family was from the parish of St-Vivien d'Ecoyeux. More than half-a-score Frenchmen named Jean immigrated to New France and were married there; three more lived in the Saint Lawrence valley without doing so. Among the more important forbears were the four sons of Vivien Jean, of Petit Fétilly, in Aunis. He was a master blacksmith at Ecoyeux, a place not far from Saint-Jean-d'Angély. He married Suzanne Hérault at La Rochelle c.1640. They had eight children, four boys and four girls. Whereas the four latter stayed in France, the four boys immigrated to New France.
