  1. 16.  Joseph Hormisdas MartinJoseph Hormisdas Martin was born on 6 Dec 1860 in Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu, Sainte-Hyacinthe, Québec, Canada; was christened on 8 Dec 1860 in Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu, Sainte-Hyacinthe, Québec, Canada (son of Maxime Martin and Marie Louise Boucher); died on 14 Oct 1934 in Lyndhurst, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA; was buried on 16 Oct 1934 in Knollwood Cemetery, Mayfield Heights, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: Joseph Arthur Martin
    • Immigration: 3 May 1869
    • Naturalization: 30 Oct 1894, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA

    Notes:

Joseph's middle name on his baptismal record and marriage record is Hormisdas. The witnesses in the baptismal record were Joseph Boucher and Marie Duclos. At the time of his naturalization in 1894, Joseph Martin was living at 341 Case Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. At the time of the 1900 Census, the Joseph Martin family was living at 122 Whitney Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio (see 1900 Ohio Census, Cuyahoga County, Roll 1254, Book 2, Page 80a). Living at the residence were Joseph, his wife Mary, Eva M., William, and Irene Martin, and Florence Burrows, said to be Joseph's sister-in-law. In 1910, the family was living at 7540 Star Avenue, Cleveland. They were living on East 103rd Street, Cleveland, in 1920. He is probably the Joseph Martin listed in the 1930 census as an inmate at the Warrensville Correction Farm, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Joseph Martin died at his residence, 5144 Oakmont Drive, South Euclid, Ohio.

According to the Julian family, Joseph Martin fell off a bicycle and hit his head, causing him some mental problems, although he had been very bright before the accident. He always wore a Derby hat in bed and always wore long underwear.

Joseph married Marie Julie Oliva Jean on 18 Jun 1882 in St. Charles Borromeo Church, Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA. Marie (daughter of Louis Jean and Célina Turcotte) was born on 16 Feb 1865 in Saint-Norbert, Norbertville, Arthabaska, Québec, Canada; was christened on 21 Feb 1865 in Saint-Norbert, Norbertville, Arthabaska, Québec, Canada; died on 26 Feb 1887 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA. Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1882, Lincoln, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA

    Notes:

The marriage record gives her name as Oliva Jean. Her death certificate lists "consumption" as the cause of death, but family tradition holds that she died in childbirth.

    Children:
    1. 8. Alexander Arthur Martin was born on 19 Apr 1883 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA; died on 7 Dec 1960 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, USA; was buried on 10 Dec 1960 in Memorial Park Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Naturalization: 9 Oct 1882, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA
    • Residence: 1883, 2 Home Avenue, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, USA
    • Occupation: 7 Aug 1883; Cleveland policeman

    Notes:

At the time of the 1861 census, Charles Duff was living at Bothy of Charleston, Liff and Benvie, Angus, and his occupation was given as ploughman. In their 1868 marriage record, Charles Duff and Ann Nolan were both recorded as living in Lochee and working as farm servants in the parish of Liff and Benvie. On the death record of their first child, Alexander, in 1868, Charles' occupation was given as police constable in Dundee. Charles apparently came to the United States before the rest of his family, as his record in the Declarations of Aliens (Volume 8, p. 398, 9 October 1880) in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, states that he arrived in the United States in September 1868. His wife and children arrived in New York from Glasgow on 31 October 1872, on the S.S. California. The California was built by Alexander Stephen & Sons of Glasgow and was launched on 12 March 1872. Its maiden voyage was 15 June 1872, and it was scrapped in 1904. Charles probably came first to find employment, and then returned to Scotland to prepare his family for emigration. He is listed in the 1871 census of St. Mary, Dundee, with the occupation of police officer. There is no date on the census record. Again, he must have returned to the United States before his wife and children. He is probably the Charles Duff listed on the passenger manifest for the S.S. Anglia, which arrived in New York from Glasgow on 16 September 1871. On 7 August 1883, Charles was appointed a patrolman (Patrolman 160, at $840 per year) with the Cleveland Police Department, and took his Oath of Office the same day. His previous occupation was given as "paver," and his address was 6 Home Street.

    Notes:

Notes from C. Ray Bryan, Jr: "When the war came in 1861, A.G. Bryan was too young to go; but Asa L. Bryan and Cicero C. Bryan, his older half-brothers, served the cause. After Union raiders plundered the farm and drove off the stock, "Gus," as he was called, was the man who raised a garden using one crippled ox, the only stock that was left. His mother was in LaFayette buying supplies when the Union army threw a picket around the town. She was allowed to return to the farm only on the condition that she execute an oath of allegiance to the Federal Union and swear not to give aid to the Confederate Cause. In later years, Gus remembered that sad day as the day his mother "became an old woman." In 1870 A.G. Bryan married Hettie Ann Williams, the daughter of Jeremiah J. Williams and Phoebe Ann Lowery Williams. In 1881, A.G. Bryan married Margaret Ella Talley, the daughter of Henry Webb Talley and Elizabeth Jane Meredith. Henry Webb Talley, a pioneer settler of Walker County, like his father Henry Hubbard Talley was a shoemaker. During the battle of LaFayette the Talley house, which was near the center of town, came under musket fire; the children were sheltered by their mother in a large fireplace and later took refuge in a windowless brick smoke house. In 1881, the Talley shoe shop did a good business with A.G. Bryan during the period Gus was courting Ella, it was reported. A family story states that Ella, while a girl, had been a student in a school taught by her future husband. In his second family, the children were Pearl Lucille born in 1884 and died in 1886, Clarence Ray born Nov 21, 1887, and Mildred, born June 16, 1894. The first children were born in Trion, Georgia, where A.G. was employed by the Allgoods as a cotton buyer. There followed several years as a truck farmer in Florida, where Mildred was born, growing winter vegetables for shipment. Then the family moved to Harriman and he ran a lumber mill. He then served for several years as the representative of International Harvest covering an area in three states. He and a partner founded the Hamilton County Buggy and Implement Company on Main Street in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which was his business for a number of years. During this period he was active in his church, Free Masonry, Democratic politics and civic affairs. He had many personal friends and innumerable stories with which to regale them. Any was welcomed to his home and table. A mild paralytic stroke forced him to reduce his physical activity. He sold his business interest in farm implements and bought an interest in the Hamilton County Herald where he served as editor, which gave him an outlet for his political opinions and his Irish wit. A later stroke forced retirement. He died on July 21, 1926."

Augustus married Margaret Ella Talley on 25 Aug 1881 in Cedar Grove, Laurens County, Georgia, USA. Living with her were her daughter, Ida, age 15; son, Joseph, age 19 (a machinist); daughter-in-law Aggie, age 20, and; granddaughter Mary, age 1. If this is the same family, then it would appear that Joseph Martin had been married previously, before marrying Maria Jean. She was living at 499 N. Main Street, Providence, in 1885. Her son, Maxime, lived there as well. At the time of the 1900 Census, she was living at 376 Richmond Street, Providence, Rhode Island (Roll 1507, Book 1, Page 2a). • Census: 1860, Hale Township, Hardin County, Ohio, USA
    • Census: 1870, Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio, USA

    Notes:

Amos Kohn's family Bible lists a son named George, born on January 22, 1824, which is about a month earlier than the birthday implied in George Kohn's death record, which states that he was 47 years, 11 months, and 2 days old.

George Kohn was a member of the First Methodist Church, Kenton, Ohio, having been transferred by letter on 24 Sept 1865. He died of "lung fever." Both the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Hardin County, Ohio, give his birthplace as Virginia, but his death record gives his birthplace as what appears to be "Fairfield". The entry in the 1860 census of Hardin County, Ohio, includes George Coon (age 35, born Virginia), Hannah Coon (age 27, born Ohio), John Coon (age 6, born Ohio), Sally Coon (age 7, born Ohio), and Rachel Coon (age 2, born Ohio). The 1870 census of Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio, records the family as follows: John (sic) Kohn (age 45, born Virginia), Hannah Kohn (age 38, born Ohio), Rachel Kohn (age 10, born Ohio), William Kohn (age 8, born Ohio), Nancy Kohn (age 4, born Ohio), and Eliza Kohn (age 4, born Ohio). George's son, John David Kohn, was living with the nearby family of John Whitmore. George's mother may have been named Mary. There was a Mary Koons living with the Curtis Wilkin family in Pleasant Township, Hardin County, Ohio, at the time of the 1870 census. She was 74 years old, and her birthplace is recorded as Virginia.

A George Khon (sic), age 38, born in Virginia, registered for the draft in 1862 in Boles Creek (Bokescreek) Township, Logan County, Ohio, just south of the Hardin County line.

The administrator of George Kohn's estate was John Wall. The last name is spelled Cone on the inventory, which included the following:
    one cookstove - $5.00
    cooking utensils - $20.00
bed and bedding (no value stated)
    household goods - $10.00
    2 pigs - $2.50
    patch of wheat - $9.60
    George owed the following amounts:
    George Woods - $4.25
    J.J. Ripley - $14.56
    Samuel Hawk - $3.12
    Jacob Woods - $8.55
He was reported to owe $175 in total and left "no personal estate". His land was sold and was identified as the northeast quarter of section 5, township 4, range 11, in the center of the Findlay Road. Named as heirs were his widow, Hannah, and children John, Rachel, William, Nancy, and Elisa. W.T. Cessna was appointed guardian, presumably of his minor children. The last name is spelled Kolen in the newspaper notice.

James L. Cotter emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1835 with his father, and he later settled in the Park Hill, Ontario, area. In the "History of Middlesex County," James is listed as a warden and pathmaster for the year 1845. He is recorded as having owned land in Middlesex County, Ontario. The land was in McGillivray Township, Lot 23, Concession 9, and was purchased on 17 Dec 1842. His brother, George, purchased the neighboring lot, No. 22, on the same day; their brother, John, purchased Lot No. 20 on 18 Mar 1844 . However, James Cotter is also listed on the 28 September 1837 map of McGillivray Township as owning that same lot number. James Cotter appears in the 1848 census of Canada West (Ontario). He is listed on page 3, McGillivray Township, Huron (now Middlesex) County. Around 1848, James Cotter moved to Clark County, Ohio. He filed a Declaration of Intention for Naturalization in Clark County, Ohio, on 20 March 1861, but apparently never completed the naturalization process. At the time of the 1850 census, James and Maria (name given as Mary in the census) were living in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. James' age was given as 26, and his occupation was sawyer. Maria's age was given as 25. At the time of the 1860 census, the family was living in German Township, Clark County, Ohio. Included in the census is Anna Cotter, aged 66. He is listed in the 1880 census of Clark County, Ohio. James Cotter was a member of The Champion City Guard, Company A, Seventh Infantry, Ohio National Guard, during the Civil War. He purchased land from William T. Haley in the city of Springfield, Ohio, on 13 July 1855, and from James T. Warder on 14 December 1870, in Springfield Township. Around 1881, the James Cotter family moved to Illinois, settling near Claremont in Richland County. James Cotter purchased land from Robert B. and Ellen Patrick in Richland County, on 27 November 1882. The property is described in the deed as the northwest fourth of the southeast quarter of Section 26, township 4, North Range (numbered 14 west), "containing 40 acres, more or less." The property was sold by his heirs to Mary Cotter Melrose, James's daughter, for $800 on 28 November 1902, following the death of James's second wife in August 1902. James is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, Ohio, in Lot 242 of Section L. This plot was purchased by Ann Cotter on 18 April 1899.

A letter of transfer from his church at Catfish, Marion District, South Carolina, to Fulton, Dallas County, Alabama, was dated 13 November 1852. His name was given as LaFayette Campbell. At the time of the 1860 census, the family was living in Orrville District, Dallas County, Alabama. Peyton's occupation was listed as gin maker, and his age was given as 36, born in North Carolina. In 1870, Peyton Campbell was living in Cahaba, Alabama. He was a cotton gin maker. According to family tradition, the Campbells may have been from Hoboken, New Jersey. Also mentioned are Hudson or Bergen County, New Jersey, and the maiden name of Peyton's mother is given as Peyton (Paton, Patton, etc.). His name may have been Peter rather than Peyton, and the 1932 soldier's headstone application filed by a supposed descendant uses the name Patrick Lafayette Campbell. He was listed as Peyton in the 1880 census of Calera, Shelby County, Alabama. On 5 April 1881, Peyton L. Campbell made an application for relief for maimed Confederate soldiers in Shelby County, Alabama. The application states that he was shot in both legs at the Battle of Gettysburg while a member of Company F, 5th Alabama Infantry. In the book, "Company F, 5th Alabama Regiment, Dallas County, Alabama, 'Cahaba Rifles,' " P.L. Campbell's Civil War record is given as follows: P.L. Campbell, Pvt., enlisted 10 March 1862. Cahaba, AL, wounded and captured 1 Jul 1863 Gettysburg PA." There are no dates on his tombstone, which gives his name as P.L. Campbell and mentions his Civil War service. His grandson, Robert Clifton Campbell, is buried in the same cemetery. There is also a monument for P.L. Campbell at Summer Hill Baptist Church Cemetery on Highway 25 in Shelby County, Alabama. A letter in possession of the Bryan family from Edward M. Jackson, Catfish, Marion District, South Carolina, to W L. Barton and LaFayette Campbell, Fulton, Dallas County, Alabama, restores Campbell to the church. It also serves as a letter of dismissal and transfer to another church from the Baptist Church of Christ at Catfish. The 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, on May 5, 1861, and fought through the war until it was surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April of 1865. It mustered a total of 1,719 men during the Civil War, of whom 300 were killed in action and 240 died of disease. At Gettysburg, where P.L. Campbell was wounded and taken prisoner, the regiment was at Oak Ridge on July 1 and at Culp's Hill on July 2 and 3. On July 4, the regiment moved to Seminary Ridge.

Litha Kilgore, in a letter to Lucy Lanham Bryan dated May 28, 1970, stated that Peyton Campbell's mother was a Patton.
