- George Cotter joined the North West Mounted Police on 9 June 1879. George Cotter was amongst the charter members of the Masonic Alberta Lodge No. 3, in Ft.Macleod which was instituted prior to December 31, 1890. He was a member of the NWMP contingent at the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. He helped build Fort Walsh and was one of three police who went into Sitting Bull's camp to encourage the Indians to go return to the United States. He retired on 4 April 1929, with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Reg No. 322, ex-S/Sgt. George Sackville Cotter, 88, died at Dunnville, Ont., Dec 16, 1947. He served in the N.W.M.P. from June 9, 1879 to June 8, 1884, and from June 9, 1888 to Apr. 30, 1904, being stationed in the Northwest Territories at Regina and Wood Mountain (Sask.), and St. Mary's, Fort Walsh, Fort Macleod, Cardston, and Pincher Creek (Alta.) He was one of the members of the Force who welcomed the Mormon pioneers to Western Canada 50 years ago.
