Notes - This is probably the same Samuel Baldwin listed as a member of Class No. 9, 56th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Loudoun County Militia, Captain George Rust's Company, on 15 September 1794. In October 1794, the regiment was in western Pennsylvania active in suppressing the Whiskey Rebellion. About 20 years after that, George Rust purchased a plantation as part of the settlement of the estate of Peter Romine, possibly the grandfather of Samuel Baldwin's wife. Samuel and Hannah Baldwin moved to Ohio from Loudoun County, Virginia, sometime between 1807, when their daughter Charlotte was born, and 1809, when Samuel signed a deed in Belmont County. On 30 May 1809, Samuel purchased 80 acres of land in Muskingum County from James Johnston of Steubenville, for $400. He is listed on the 1814 tax list of Muskingum County, Ohio. When he died intestate in 1830, the land passed to his children. By 1857, his son James had bought out the other heirs and owned the farm. Several of his children gave Samuel's place of birth as Virginia, rather than Pennsylvania, in the 1880 census.
