Samuel Magruder, who always gave his middle name as Gowen, even though the family Bible of John W. Magruder gave it as McGown, enlisted in the Union Army on 7 August 1862, at Wheeling, West Virginia. He was mustered into service as a private in Company H, 15th Regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged at Richmond, Virginia, on 14 June 1865. He was described in his pension application as being 5'10½", with hazel eyes, dark hair, and light complexion. After the war, he lived for ten years at Brunswick, Missouri, then for ten years at Bentonville, Arkansas, and then moved to McAlester, Oklahoma.
