Notes |
- Sir Niel (or Nigel) Campbell was knighted by Alexander III toward the end of that monarch's reign. He joined Robert Bruce in 1296, and adhered to him in prosperity and adversity, and fought by his side in almost battle, from Methven to Bannockburn. The King had so high a sense of Campbell's services that he gave him him his sister, Lady Mary Bruce, in marriage (Campbell's third wife). After Bannockburn, Sir Niel Campbell was one of the great barons in the Parliament which met at Ayr, 26 April 1315, and fixed the succession to the crown.
