- On his second marriage license, Samuel stated that his parents were Samuel Baldwin and Louisa Romine. On his death record, his son stated that Samuel's parents were William Baldwin and Sarah Romine. Based on an 1844 Muskingum County, Ohio, court case, the parents listed here are most likely correct.

- Samuel L. Baldwin served in Company E, 63rd Indiana Infantry, during the Civil War. He enlisted on 11 August 1862 in Covington, Indiana, and was discharged on 21 June 1865 in Greensboro, North Carolina. In his later years, he lived in the Danville, Indiana, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers.
