  Notes	Joseph Baldwin graduated from Bethany College in (West) Virginia in 1852. He went to Missouri, where he taught school for a number of years. From 1859 through 1863, he conducted several private normal schools in Indiana. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War from 1863 to 1864. In 1867, he moved to Kirksville, Missouri, where he opened a normal school. This school became a state institution in 1870, with Joseph Baldwin as its first president. He served in this capacity until 1881, and his statue still stands on the campus of Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville. From 1881 through 1891, he headed the Normal School at Huntsville, Texas. From 1891 through 1897, he held the chair of pedagogy at the University of Texas, retiring in 1897. He authored a number of books on education.
