He was collector of customs for the port of Cork; a colonel of dragoons; marshal and secretary of the West Indies, 1676; was appointed, 23 February 1689 by Lieutenant-General Justin MacCarthy, Lord Mountcashell, commander-in-chief of King James's forces in Cork, Kerry, and Limerick; head ranger of Shannon Park, 1689, and; first sovereign of Midleton on its incorporation by charter, 1687. In 1691 he received from the Protestants of Cork a testimonial declaring that while he was governor of Cork for James II, they did "receive all manner of countenance and favour from him, and that there was no hardship put upon them."
