1674 - 1729 (55 years)-
Name John Sotcher Birth cir 1674 Sussex, England Gender Male Death 19 Nov 1729 Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Burial Falls Friends Meeting Cemetery #1, Fallsington, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Siblings 1 brother and 3 sisters Notes - John Sotcher was from Sussex, England. He was a barber by trade, and came with William Penn to America in 1699. Some sources say that he came to America as early as 1687. In either case, he became the steward of Penn's estate, Pennsbury Manor, where he married Mary Loftus (or Lofty). She had come from Bristol, England, to Pennsylvania in 1694, on a certificate prepared by Thomas Callowhill, father of Penn's second wife, Hannah. William Penn and his wife witnessed the marriage and marriage certificate of the Sotchers. Letitia Penn gave the bride a chest of drawers. John Sotcher went to England late in 1701 to collect a legacy from his brother. The Sotchers continued working at Pennsbury until 1714, when they moved to operate a ferry nearby. They owned land on the Pennsylvania side of Burlington ferry. William Penn considered John Sotcher his "trusted friend, whom he delighted to call 'Honest John' and to whom the great founder consigned the care of his domestic affairs at Pennsbury on his first departure from America." (J.H. Battle, History of Bucks County, Pennsylvania) John Sotcher was also for many years a member of the colonial assembly.
