  Notes	James Howell was born near Morganton, in Monongalia County, (West) Virginia. He enlisted in the Union Army on 22 June 1861, at Clarksburg, West Virginia. He served in Company A, 1st Regiment, West Virginia Cavalry as a private, and was honorably discharged on 12 September 1864, at Wheeling. He was described in his service records as being 6'1", with blue eyes, light hair, and dark complexion. After the war the family lived in Clinton County, Ohio (1865-1870), and then in Fayette County, Ohio.
