Two years later, on 29 November 1771, he was married in Québec City to Catherine Gateau, a King's girl from the parish of Saint-Médard in Paris. The 20-year-old bride seems to have hesitated in her choice of a husband. On 11 October 1671, she had signed a marriage contract with Abraham Albert; the contract was annulled. On the following 2 November, there was the contract with Vivien Jean. It was also annulled but the parties changed their minds and validated it 17 days later. In his history of the King's girls, Sylvio Dumas wrote that the girl had a marriage portion worth 300 pounds as well as the King's dowry of 50 pounds. The couple had six boys and three girls.
