In 1729, Joseph Baldwin was condemned by the Falls Monthly Meeting, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, for "marriage out of unity." He were later reinstated. On 17 September 1730, Joseph Baldwin was appointed constable of Bristol for a term of one year. Joseph Baldwin was originally from Bristol, Pennsylvania, but moved from there in 1734, first to Philadelphia and then to Marple Township, Chester County. He moved from Chester County, Pennsylvania, to Loudoun County, Virginia, with his wife, Ann, (sometimes called Susannah), by 1773. On 19 April 1773, he purchased 200 acres of land in Loudoun County from James and Rachel Maris of Newtown Township, Chester County. This land was probably at the site of present-day Hamilton, Virginia. His name appeared on the county's list of tithables 1773, 1774, 1775, 1777, 1778, and 1783. In September 1786, Joseph and his wife sold 43 acres of their land to a neighbor, George Tavenner, and in April 1793, they sold two more parcels to George Tavenner. Finally, on 7 September 1793, they sold the remaining 148 acres of land to Stacey Janney. On the same date, they purchased from Stacey Janney a tract of 161 acres in the southwest corner of Loudoun County. They sold this parcel about a year later and purchased 67 acres from William and Dinah Hand, located partly in Frederick County and partly in Shenandoah County. The county boundaries were redrawn, putting all of the land in Shenandoah County. The land lay near Front Royal, and when Warren County was formed from Shenandoah County in 1836, the land was in the new county. While residents of Loudoun County, the Baldwins were apparently connected with Ketocton Baptist Church. The records show an entry in May 1794 in which the clerk was directed to "give a letter of dismission to Sister Baldwin, at her request." This would have coincided with the family's move to Shenandoah County, but it is not clear who "Sister Baldwin" was. She could have been the wife of either Joseph Baldwin, Sr., or Joseph Baldwin, Jr.

A John Baldwin was listed on the tax list of Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1761. He was single and identified as living at "Watson's." He appeared again as a single man on the tax list for 1762. The Watson referred to in the tax list was probably John Watson (1703-1764), who moved from Bristol to Middletown Township, in 1734. John Watson had a brother, Mark (1698-1749), who had married Ann Sotcher, an aunt of Mercy Sotcher Baldwin. John Baldwin may have been introduced to his future wife while working for John Watson. A John Baldwin was listed on the 1764 tax list of Lower Makefield Township, Bucks County. This could have been the same John Baldwin, after his marriage and after the death of his employer, John Watson. This was the last mention of this John Baldwin in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John Baldwin first appeared in Loudoun County, Virginia, records in 1769, when his name appeared on the list of Loudoun County Tithables. He appeared on the list again in 1770, 1773, 1774, 1781, and 1785.

Joseph Baldwin went from Chester County, Pennsylvania, to Loudoun County, Virginia, in 1773. He is thought to have served in the Revolutionary War. There is a record of a Joseph Baldwin who served as a Private in Captian Abel Westfall's Company of the 8th Virginia Regiment from 25 May 1776 to 30 April 1777, when he was reported to have deserted. Though the background of this Baldwin family was probably Quaker, there is almost no mention of them in Loudoun County Friends records. A single entry for 28 September 1783, shows that a Joseph Baldwin was received on request at Fairfax Monthly Meeting (now Waterford). Joseph Baldwin, Jr., must have inherited his father's lands in Shenandoah County. He apparently lived in Shenandoah County until at least 1818, when he moved to Shenango Township, Beaver (now Lawrence) County, Pennsylvania.

This is probably the same John Baldwin listed as a member of Class No. 8, 57th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Loudoun County Militia, Captain Benjamin Grayson's Company, in 1792, although it could be his father.

John apparently died in 1825, as an inventory of his estate is dated 11 July 1825. He died intestate, and the settlement of his estate took ten years, with the final account being filed in July of 1835. His brother, Mahlon, was appointed administrator, but after Mahlon died in 1834, John L. Chamblin, Mahlon's son-in-law, was appointed administrator. The 1825 inventory shows that John Baldwin owned slaves, and the inventory was valued at $822.50. Payments were made to John's brothers, James, Samuel, and Stacey, in 1829, along with payments to John Whitacre and David Ewers, spouses of his sisters.

This is probably the same Samuel Baldwin listed as a member of Class No. 9, 56th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Loudoun County Militia, Captain George Rust's Company, on 15 September 1794. In October 1794, the regiment was in western Pennsylvania active in suppressing the Whiskey Rebellion. About 20 years after that, George Rust purchased a plantation as part of the settlement of the estate of Peter Romine, possibly the grandfather of Samuel Baldwin's wife. Samuel and Hannah Baldwin moved to Ohio from Loudoun County, Virginia, sometime between 1807, when their daughter Charlotte was born, and 1809, when Samuel signed a deed in Belmont County. On 30 May 1809, Samuel purchased 80 acres of land in Muskingum County from James Johnston of Steubenville, for $400. He is listed on the 1814 tax list of Muskingum County, Ohio. When he died intestate in 1830, the land passed to his children. By 1857, his son James had bought out the other heirs and owned the farm. Several of his children gave Samuel's place of birth as Virginia, rather than Pennsylvania, in the 1880 census.

Mahlon Baldwin witnessed the will of Thomas Brown, his future wife's uncle, on 23 April 1794. On 6 October 1802, Mahlon Baldwin purchased 90 acres of land from Burr and Catherine Powell. The land lay along the road leading from Middleburg to Colston's Mill. On 10 September 1804, Mahlon Baldwin purchased 64 acres from John and Hannah Inden. This land was on the east side of Goose Creek, apparently close to his previously purchased tract. On 18 July 1822, Mahlon Baldwin purchased one acre in the town of Union from his wife's parents. On 26 January 1824, he purchased another lot in Union from John and Harriet Keene.

The inventory of Joseph Baldwin's estate was taken 27 March 1815 in Loudoun County. The estate consisted of carpenter's tools, lumber, and household furnishings. This is probably the same Joseph Baldwin listed as a member of Class No. 6, 56th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Loudoun County Militia, Captain George Rust's Company, on 15 September 1794. A Joseph Baldwin was adjudged to be the father of a male child born to Hannah Roach in Loudoun County, Virginia, on 15 April 1803. He was ordered to pay 6 pounds per year for four years to support the child. It is unknown if it was this Joseph Baldwin. He apparently did father a child by Jane Bates in Loudoun County. Samuel Baldwin probably moved from Shenandoah County, Virginia, to North Sewickley Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in 1804. A Nathaniel Pettit had moved to North Sewickley Township in 1799 from Virginia, and may have been a relative of Samuel Baldwin's mother, Mary Pettit Baldwin. Samuel Baldwin appeared on the North Sewickley Township tax list in 1805 as a carpenter. By 1807 he had moved a few miles north to Shenango Township (now Lawrence County), where he appeared on the tax list for that year. Samuel and Mary Hazen Baldwin were members of the Providence Baptist Church in North Sewickley Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Later, Samuel Baldwin became a charter member of the Harmony Baptist Church in Slippery Rock Township, when it was founded in 1849. Samuel was a farmer and a school teacher and was nicknamed "the Professor." He served in the War of 1812 as a private in Company 9, commanded by Captian Wilson Caldoo, in the 138th Regiment of the 2nd Brigade, 16th Division, Pennsylvania Militia. He was drafted on 8 January 1814, and served until 13 March 1814, when he was released at Erie, Pennsylvania. In 1850, he received 50 acres of bounty land for his service. Samuel's will was written 3 April 1856 and proved 12 April 1856 in Lawrence County. He left his farm to his sons, Samuel H. and Joseph Baldwin, with provisions for cash payments to his daughters.

Susannah Baldwin Hickman must have been widowed at an early age, as she appears alone on the 1831 tax list for Big Beaver Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. (This township became part of Lawrence County when it was created in 1849.) In the 1850 census, she was living with the family of Pressly McKinzie of Big Beaver Township. He may have been a son-in-law. Susannah may have lived for a time in Muskingum County, Ohio. The Salt Creek Baptist Church of Muskingum County recorded a member by that name from 1816 to 1818. At that time, the family of her cousin, Samuel Baldwin, was affiliated there.

Charlotte Baldwin Russell was received by letter at the Salt Creek Baptist Church in Muskingum County, Ohio, on 3 September 1840. She is also recorded as becoming a member by letter at the same church on 3 September 1842. She was "excluded" by the church on 2 December 1848. She may also be the Mrs. Russell who was baptized by the church on 2 October 1831 and dismissed on 2 August 1834. In 1880, she was living in Washington Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, with John and Matilda Mitchlett, her daughter and son-in-law. Abraham Baldwin was said to be 37 years old in the 1850 census. According to family tradition, shortly after his father's death, Abraham was accused of fathering an illegitimate child and refusing to marry the mother, whose surname was Boggs. He reportedly said he was going to Australia, and was never heard from again. However, his name does appear in land records in Muskingum County as late as 1858. His share in his father's estate was sold at a sheriff's sale in 1857 to his brother, James. Abraham Baldwin is recorded as having been a patient at an asylum in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, where he died. He was admitted on 16 October 1872, on 7 May 1873, and on 2 April 1878. His three asylum admission records from Australia indicate that he was born between 1825-1827.

Elam and Ruth Baldwin Bailey lived near Akron, Summit County, Ohio. Their son, Samuel, was apparently a wealthy man and ran a flour mill in Kent, Ohio. Their son, Griffith, lived in Cleveland and worked for one of the newspapers. The Weekly Beacon (Akron, Ohio) of 28 August 1878 reported that Ruth had returned from a five-week visit with friends at Zanesville. According to the 1900 census, she was born in May 1815, but her death record (1901) states that she was 82. The date given here (12 May 1820) is based on the fact that Ruth and Nancy Baldwin were twins, and Nancy's stated age on her tombstone indicates the 12 May 1820 birthdate.

Mahlon Baldwin was apparently never married. He left a will in which he specified that his slave woman, Jane Toliver, and her son Gilmore should be set free on Mahlon's death. His assets were to be held by his executors, John S. Ross and Herod Thomas, and be paid to Gilmore when he reached 21 years of age. This will was challenged by Mahlon's siblings (Joseph, William, Stacey, and Lucinda) and several McVeigh relatives, but by 1866 the will had been upheld.

The Nathaniel Baldwin family was living in Shenango Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, at the time of the 1850 census. The land that the family owned became part of Taylor Township in 1853, and they were listed there in the 1860 census. According to his obituary, Nathaniel was still active on the family farm when he died; he was run over by a grain drill and died two weeks later. He was apparently quite prosperous and owned limestone quarries operated by Green & Marquis. His will was dated 9 April 1892, and was filed in Lawrence County on 12 November 1892. In the will, he mentions his wife, Catherine, his son Isaac, and the children of his deceased sons, Abram and Samuel. He also left money to Bethel Baptist Church.

Joseph Baldwin graduated from Bethany College in (West) Virginia in 1852. He went to Missouri, where he taught school for a number of years. From 1859 through 1863, he conducted several private normal schools in Indiana. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War from 1863 to 1864. In 1867, he moved to Kirksville, Missouri, where he opened a normal school. This school became a state institution in 1870, with Joseph Baldwin as its first president. He served in this capacity until 1881, and his statue still stands on the campus of Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville. From 1881 through 1891, he headed the Normal School at Huntsville, Texas. From 1891 through 1897, he held the chair of pedagogy at the University of Texas, retiring in 1897. He authored a number of books on education.
