    Notes:

    Nicolas Bacon, Elizabeth I's Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, attended CambridgeUniversity; he also studied for a time in Paris in the 1520s. He became a lawyer at Gray's Inn in London and rose through the ranks of the legal profession, acquiring some estates along the way as Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. He fell out of favor during Mary's reign, but Elizabeth made him Lord Keeper of the Great Seal (probably through the influence of his brother-in-law, William Cecil, Elizabeth's chief advisor and ancestor of the Earls of Salisbury). Bacon was highly influential in Elizabethan politics and finance for the rest of his life, and was buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
