Living with James Cotter at the time of the 1860 Clark County, Ohio, census was a 66-year-old woman named Anna Cotter, who may have been his mother. The baptismal record of her daughter, Mary, states that Arabella's name was Isabella Ann. Isabella is also the name given on the marriage record of her daughter, Annabella, to Amos Barber. Her maiden name may have been Lyne.

Margaret (Mary) Cotter's baptism was recorded at the "Parish of St. Peter the Great alias Subdeanery, Sussex". The abode of her parents was "barracks", and her father's occupation was stated to be Surgeon of the West Meath Militia. The Rev. Bartholomew Middleton performed the baptism. Margaret Cotter Conway was "churched" (became a member) on 28 September 1844, in McGillivray Township, Middlesex County, Ontario. Her birthplace was stated to be Dublin on the death record of her son, William. Her will was probated in Wabasha County in 1869 (Will Book A, page 49).

George Cotter made his "Declaration for Naturalization" in Clark County, Ohio, on 5 June 1855, declaring that he had been in the United States for five years. The declaration was granted in 1857.

James L. Cotter emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1835 with his father, and he later settled in the Park Hill, Ontario, area. In the "History of Middlesex County," James is listed as a warden and pathmaster for the year 1845. He is recorded as having owned land in Middlesex County, Ontario. The land was in McGillivray Township, Lot 23, Concession 9, and was purchased on 17 Dec 1842. His brother, George, purchased the neighboring lot, No. 22, on the same day; their brother, John, purchased Lot No. 20 on 18 Mar 1844 . However, James Cotter is also listed on the 28 September 1837 map of McGillivray Township as owning that same lot number. James Cotter appears in the 1848 census of Canada West (Ontario). He is listed on page 3, McGillivray Township, Huron (now Middlesex) County. Around 1848, James Cotter moved to Clark County, Ohio. He filed a Declaration of Intention for Naturalization in Clark County, Ohio, on 20 March 1861, but apparently never completed the naturalization process. At the time of the 1850 census, James and Maria (name given as Mary in the census) were living in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. James' age was given as 26, and his occupation was sawyer. Maria's age was given as 25. At the time of the 1860 census, the family was living in German Township, Clark County, Ohio. Included in the census is Anna Cotter, aged 66. He is listed in the 1880 census of Clark County, Ohio. James Cotter was a member of The Champion City Guard, Company A, Seventh Infantry, Ohio National Guard, during the Civil War. He purchased land from William T. Haley in the city of Springfield, Ohio, on 13 July 1855, and from James T. Warder on 14 December 1870, in Springfield Township. Around 1881, the James Cotter family moved to Illinois, settling near Claremont in Richland County. James Cotter purchased land from Robert B. and Ellen Patrick in Richland County, on 27 November 1882. The property is described in the deed as the northwest fourth of the southeast quarter of Section 26, township 4, North Range (numbered 14 west), "containing 40 acres, more or less." The property was sold by his heirs to Mary Cotter Melrose, James's daughter, for $800 on 28 November 1902, following the death of James's second wife in August 1902. James is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery, Springfield, Ohio, in Lot 242 of Section L. This plot was purchased by Ann Cotter on 18 April 1899.

Entered Upon Rest.

Mary Etta, beloved wife of Dr. H N Rogers died on Sunday after a long continued illness at her home on Oak st. She has been a patient sufferer for many years. Funeral services were conducted at her late residence by Rev. O V Siniff, pastorf the M E church, of which she has long been a faithful member. The members of the Relief Corps also attended in a body. The burial was at Lake City in Dr. Roger's family lot. The pall bearers were: F H Griebie, W G Brownell, C O Wescott, M W Niederkorn, D O Smith and W J Fletcher.
Miss Mary Etta Conway was born in the township of McGilvery in upper Canada on the 10th day of May A D 1846 and died at Farmington, on the 13th day of December A D 1903, aged 57 years, 7 months and 3 days.
The parents of the deceased, Mr. Patrick Conway and Mrs. Margaret Conway, moved into the United States in October A D 1857 and located in Pepin, Pepin county, Wis. The deceased went to live with a married sister who was living in the townshipf Gilford, Wabasha county, Minnesota in the winter of 1860-1. By her own efforts she fitted herself for the profession of teacher and followed it for eight years, teaching in the public schools of Wabasha county the greater part of the time. Miss Conway and H N Rogers M D were married on the 18th day of February A D 1872 and lived at Zumbro Falls, in Wabasha county, State of Minnesota until A D 1886, when they moved to Whitehall, Trempeleau county, Wisconsin. In 1889 they moved to Chippewa Falls, Chippewa county, state of Wisconsin; in 1891 they moved to Bloomer, same county and in March 1895 they moved to Farmington, Dakota county, state of Minnesota where they resided at the time of her decease. Her leading characteristics were, faithful and affectionate to her husband, loyal to her friends, methodical and orderly in her work, careful and economical in the management of her home, always in sympathy with those who were sick or who had other troubles, and always industrious.
The survivors of the immediate family of deceased include Mrs. Louise Wood and Mrs. F A Vrooman of Lakeville and Mr. E S Conway of the firm of W W Kimball & Co. of Chicago.
The deceased was generally beloved in the community in which she spent the closing years of her life. An uncomplaining sufferer, she was a comfort to those who were also sufferers, was deeply interested in them and with a sweet sympathy whichas never withheld, won many from their own troubles. Owing to her health, she was not able to do all she desired to help out the interests of those she lived among and loved, but the encouragement of her cheery interest was a great help in all matters of which she had knowledge. She will be long missed by a large circle of acquaintances and friends who mourh her loss and sympathize with her husband in his bereavement.

Mrs. H. N. Rogers died at her home in Farmington last Sunday from cancer, aged fifty-seven years. Miss Mary E. Conway was born at McGilvery, Canada, and married to Dr. Rogers at Knight's Creek, Wis., Feb. 18th, 1872. The latter located at Farington in March, 1865. Mrs. Rogers was a sincere, christian woman, and greatly beloved by many friends. The funeral was held from the house on Tuesday, the Rev. O. V. Sinif officiating, with interment in Lake City.

At the time of the 1880 census, the Edwin Conway family was living in Cicero, Cook County, Illinois. Edwin was Vice-President of the Kimball Piano Company. According to the book "McNair, McNear, and McNeir Genealogies", Edwin Conway and his wife owned the Mason & Hamlin Piano Company (1923). The following is quoted from the website Greenline Wheels (http://www.greenlinewheels.com/poi/conway-grave) : Conway attended college intending to become a surgeon. He wed Sarah Rogers of Mauston, Wisconsin and they had three children. Quite by accident, Conway became involved with selling organs to farmers and was so successful that W.W. Kimball invited him to head Kimball's wholesale piano establishment in Chicago in 1875. Once settled, he became active in politics and served as president of the Cicero Town Board from 1883-1888. He later served on the Republican Central Committee in Cook County. Conway always remembered his early financial struggles and carried his lunch with him to the Kimball Piano Company office until he had $50,000 in the bank. He served as president of a railroad company, held top positions in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and became a leader in the Chicago Association of Commerce. He was also an early promoter of the first Historical Society in Oak Park, established in May 1898 but disbanded shortly afterwards. On his small gravestone is engraved "He loved his fellow men." He was a delegate to Republican National Convention from Illinois in 1896 and a Presidential Elector for Illinois in 1900.

The following is quoted from the book "History of Illinois Republicanism: Embracing a History of the Republican Party in the State to the Prsent Time", by Green B. Raum:

Edwin S. Conway, the Secretary and Manager of the great W. W. Kimball Company of Chicago, is known as one of the best business men in the city. Mr. Conway is proud of the magnificent success which the house that he has so long managed has achieved. He is a guiding hand in one of the largest business enterprises in the West, its splendid instruments being favorably known almost throughout the civilized world. Mr. Conway is one of the most pronounced fac-
tors in Commercial Chicago ; he is a brainy man, who will brilliantly acquit himself in any position that he may assume. He is tactful, with an unusual endowment of good, common, practical sense. He has few equals and hardly a superior as an organizer of business, political and social courses. In the management of his vast business, in his political activity and as the head of social and fraternal organizations, he has been a power in directing toward the achievement of desired purposes. He is a man whose personality makes a deep impression and wins confidence.

Mr. Conway has always been a Republican and active in the campaigns of his party. But his activity in politics is the patriotism of a business man. He could have office if he desired it, but his political purpose is not of a selfish character. He believes that every citizen and business man should consider themselves important factors in popular government, and should perform active duty for the party of their choice. His loyalty to the Republic is evidenced by his loyalty to the doctrines of the Republican party, which he sincerely believes is the party that will perpetuate our beloved institutions. In all activities outside of his business, he is prompted by a public spirit, a sincere desire to promote the interests of the public. In accordance with this spirit he was for six years president of the Cicero Town Board, but after this long service concluded that he had done his duty in this respect, and resigned two years before the expiration of his term in order to give more attention to his business.

Mr. Conway is devoted to the principles of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and has given a large amount of time and energy to their advancement. He was a factor in the establishment of the Odd Fellows' Orphans' Home at
Lincoln, Ill., and no man has been more liberal in support of the Institutions controlled by the Order. He has been Grand Master of the State, serving during the World's Fair year. He is Grand Representative to the Sovereign Grand
Lodge serving from 1894 to date. He is a member of the Union League Club and was its Vice President ; and is also a member of Chicago Athletic Club.

Edwin S. Conway was married December 25, 1871, to Miss Sarah J. Rogers of Mauston, Wis., a very accomplished lady. They have three children, Earle E., now with the Kimball Company; and Carle C., who graduated from Yale
College in 1899, is also connected with the Kimball Company; and Sybil Sara. Mr. Conway resides in Oak Park, Ill., and has been intimately connected with the progress of that suburb for more than twenty-five years. He is a life trustee of the Scoville Institute of that town. Mr. Conway has been a member of the Republican State Central Committee and also of the Cook County Republican Central Committee. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention held in St. Louis, in 1896, and in 1900 was elected a presidential elector on the Republican ticket.

George S. Cotter, superintendent of the Springfield Water Works, was born at Springfield, Ohio, in 1862, and is a son of the late James L. Cotter, who was born in Ireland, emigrated to Canada when thirteen years of age, and came to Springfieldn 1847, where the rest of his life was passed.
George S. Cotter attended school until he was thirteen years old and then entered the machine shops of Warder, Mitchell, and Company and remained until he had learned the trade. When he was eighteen years old, he went to Aurora, Illinois, andorked in the railroad shops at that city for three years, after which he returned to Springfield and continued work as a machinist until 1884, when he became engineer of the city water works at the pumping station. He continued in that capacity for ten years and for four years more was superintendent there. In 1898 he left the city's employ and accepted a position as foreman of the machine shops of the Warder-Bushnell Company. When the International Harvester Company came into possession, he became mechanical engineer for a time and then resigned to accept the superintendency of the city water works again, and has had charge of this important municipal utility ever since. He takes an interest in politics, but only to the extent of promoting good government.
In 1891, Mr. Cotter was married to Jennie Bryant, who died on October 16, 1906, leaving four children, namely: Paul Bryant, Helen, Ruth, and George, Jr. Mr. Cotter is a member of the Elks.

His first instrument was violin, which he continued to play throughout his career, though never for a recording. Active mainly in and around Chicago, he recorded initially with Junie Cobb and the cornetist Jimmy Cobb (1928) and then as a leader (1929-1930), sometimes using his pseudonyms Kansas City Frank and Broadway Rastus. In 1929 he made recordings with Johnny and Baby Dodds in the Beale Street Washboard Band and with the Cobbs in the Windy Rhythm Kings and the Kansas City Tin Roof Stompers (Aunt Jemima Stomp/St. Louis Bound, Bruns, 7066). He also worked in Kansas City, New York, Detroit, and St. Louis, occasionally as a violinist, but more often playing piano in a vigorous barrelhouse style; Jelly Roll Stomp/Pass the Jug (1929, Bruns, 7062) provides a good example of his work in this vein. Norton Conway, stockbroker, housed many foreign students

Memorial services for Norton "Uncle Tommy" Conway, 79, whose La Jolla home was fondly called the "Conway Hilton" because more than 500 foreign students were housed there over the years, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the International Center of the University of California at San Diego. Mr. Conway willed his body to the university's School of Medicine. He died Sunday in his home.

Mr. Conway, a native of Evanston, Ill., and a 20-year La Jolla resident, started his career with a seat on the New York Stock Exchange, ran a bottling business in Trinidad, Colo., and had been a stock broker in Albuquerque, N.M., and Chicago. He worked for Shearson/American Express in La Jolla from 1963 until his 1979 retirement.

He and his wife, Dorothy, known as "Aunt Dottie," were active in many foreign-student programs here and received several commendations for their efforts.

Other survivors include two daughters, Merry Conway-Cosandey of New York City and Sylvia Jerace of Annapolis, Md.; a son, Vanderlip of Annapolis, Md.; and five grandchildren. The family suggested donations to the Friends of the International Center at UCSD.

Obituary: Dr. Harry L. Cotter, Jr., of Byron Center, died on Monday, May 22, 2006 at his residence under the care of Holland Home hospice. Dr. Cotter was born on March 5, 1921, to Harry L. and Nellie Cotter, Sr. in Springfield, Ohio. He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Bob) Wait of Hudsonville, Ronald (Peggy) Cotter of North Carolina, Debra Jane (Ken) Cash of Byron Center, and Virgil (Cathy) Cotter of Caledonia. He was a member of the squadron that completed the first successful daylight raid over Berlin; a feat that Hitler bragged would never be accomplished. He had the distinction of completing 25 successful missions by age 22 and was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Air Medal, and the Bronze Star. Dr. Cotter was also the founder of the Rocket football program for Byron Township. The family would like to thank the staff at Railside Living Center for their kindness and care for him during his stay there. Following Dr. Cotter's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private memorial was held. LINNANE, James J., 88, of Springfield, passed away Friday, September 24, 2021 in Hearth and Home on Harding Rd. He was born August 10, 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of the late Frank and Erma (Kohn) Linnane. In his youth he was employed by the E.W. Fulmer Markets of Springfield, Ohio. He graduated from Springfield Catholic Central High School in 1952 and went on to serve for two years in the US Army where he attended Military Police School at Camp Gordon, Georgia before receiving an honorable discharge in 1955. In 1960 he was a manager of the Springfield YMCA Health Club, was a licensed Massage Therapist and later was appointed as the Y Youth Director and subsequently as the Y Athletic Director. He was an avid handball player and was chairman of the Springfield Handball Club for many years. He practiced Judo since 1951 and later became an instructor. Jim had a Black Belt in both Judo and Jiujitsu. In 1964 he was selected to compete in the US Olympic Judo Trials at the New York Worlds Fair. He was vice-president of the Ohio Judo Board, a subsidiary of the National Judo Body. He also sat on the Ohio Judo promotion committee and refereed Judo tournaments for 45 years. He retired from the YMCA in 1980 and went to work at the Springfield Racquet Club until 2011. He is survived by a brother and several nieces and nephews. The John Kelly family was his very close friends and relations. He valued this relationship very much. A special thank you to Joe and Heidi Kelly and the staff at Hearth and Home for all of their assistance. A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 am in St. Raphael Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 in the church. Burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery. Due to the current pandemic, masks are recommended. Obituary from the Columbus Dispatch: TRAUTMAN Jeanine Cotter Trautman, age 75, of Hilliard, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2011. Jeanine was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 28, 1935; she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Alice Cotter. Jeanine was also preceded in death by her grandson Daniel Trautman. She was a longtime member of Upper Arlington Lutheran Church. Jeanine will be remembered for the love she had for her family, especially the time she spent with her grandchildren. She is survived by her beloved sons, David (Joan) Trautman of Granville and Paul (Celeste) Trautman of Hilliard; grandchildren, Ben, Will, Karen and Rachel; sister, Louise Balou; and many nieces and a nephew.
