Notes |
- Lydia was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Leginwood Burchfield, who settled in the 1760's on the Catawba River near what is now known as Lake Tahoma. When Lydia was about two and a half years old, she was traveling with her parents and other neighbors to the safety of Fort McDowell, not far from what is now Morganton, due to rumors of a Cherokee uprising. About five miles out of today's Marion, something startled the livestock causing them to scatter. While the men and boys attended to the problem at hand, seven Cherokee Braves ran into the group, each taking a child, and fleeing into the forest. Lydia, her older sister, Mary, and five others whose surnames were Hyatt, Leginwood (Legerwood?), Dobson, Young, and Litten were missing. The remaining children and women were rushed on to the fort for safety and a search party of fifteen to twenty men planned to return as soon as possible. Due to needed repairs at the fort, the party was delayed until after midnight on the third day. They discovered six scalped children. Five of the children were dead, but Lydia still breathed. She was quickly returned to the fort and her mother, while her father continued his search for her sister, Mary, the only child not found. Mary was never seen again, but Lydia lived, though she never grew hair and always wore a bonnet or covering on her head. [1]
