- George W. Talley joined the Confederate Army on 1 March 1863, in Benton, Polk County, Tennessee. He was a Private in Company D, 3rd Tennessee Infantry (Lillard's). He was captured at the surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi, on 3 July 1863. As a prisoner of war, he was paroled on 12 September 1863, as part of a prisoner exchange, and sent back to Chattanooga, Tennessee. In October of 1863, the regiment was at Charleston, Tennessee, with Colonel Lillard in command.
