- The descendants of Peyton LaFayette Campbell have a letter from an A.S. Campbell to A.F.G. Campbell, dated 1855. In the letter, A.S. mentions "mother, Eliza, and Charlotte." The 1850 Census of Chesterfield County, South Carolina, contains an entry for a Mary Campbell (age 55, born New Jersey) and the following people, presumed to be her children: Eliza A. (age 37, born New York), Mary C. (age 20, born South Carolina), Charlotte H. (age 16, born South Carolina), and Adrian S. (age 12, born South Carolina). Also living there was a Rebecca L. Henshaw (?), age 5. In the 1880 Alabama census, the place of birth of both of Peyton Lafayette Campbell's parents is given as New York. According to family tradition, Mary Campbell was of Dutch descent. Mary's last name is in question. According to Litha Kilgore, her last name was Patton.
