    • Sir Cormac Mór MacDermot MacCarty, lord of Muskerry, was summoned to Parliament in 1578 as Baron Blarney. He was Sheriff of Cork, and sided with the English against Hugh O'Neill. He was a courtier of Elizabeth I, who famously said "more Blarney!" in response to his constant compliments and fawning. It was this incident that brought "blarney" into the language and in later centuries made the Blarney Stone famous.
