- John Connelly was commissioned a captain while a resident of Burke County, North Carolina. From May or June 1776, he served three or four months in command of a company of North Carolina cavalry in a tour against the Cherokee Indians. In the spring of 1781, he volunteered and served three months as a first lieutenant in Captain Wells' or Welch's company in Colonel McDowell's North Carolina Regiment, and he was in the siege of Ninety-Six. In the fall of 1781, he served three months as captain of the fort in Burke County, North Carolina, under Colonel McDowell. He also went out frequently with a company scouting along the frontiers.
