John Butler Lonon served as a private in Company E, North Arkansas Volunteers, Colonel Shaler's regiment, as a cook, during the Civil War. After the war, he returned to Baxter County, Arkansas. In 1900, he was living in Independence Township, Baxter County, Arkansas.

John Butler Lonon (1839-1915) and his wife, formerly Margaret R. Mason (1836-1908), came to Baxter County from North Carolina in 1858. He was a Confederate veteran. They settled near Mountain Home in what is now the Wesley Chapel Community and were influential in founding the Chapel and donated land for it.
