    Notes:

    In the 1860 census of Liberty Hill, Athens District, Dallas County, Alabama, A.F.G. Campbell's place of birth was given as New York and his age as 44. His wife's name was stated to be F.J. Campbell, age 37, born in South (?) Carolina. His occupation was gin maker. In a letter written to him by his brother, dated 6 September 1855, A. S. Campbell of Cheraw, South Carolina, A. S. asks for a $2 loan. He noted that the first bale of cotton was in and selling at $.10, bacon at $.15 and $.16, meal at $1.00. In the letter, A.S. Campbell mentions Elias, Eliza, Mother, and that he must write to Charlotte and Mr. Warters to try to keep them from going to Texas. Charlotte was living in Orrville, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. A. F. G. Campbell was living in Cahaba, Alabama, at the time. His first name may have been Alonzo.

    Notes:

    The descendants of Peyton LaFayette Campbell have a letter from an A.S. Campbell to A.F.G. Campbell, dated 1855. In the letter, A.S. mentions "mother, Eliza, and Charlotte." The 1850 Census of Chesterfield County, South Carolina, contains an entry for a Mary Campbell (age 55, born New Jersey) and the following people, presumed to be her children: Eliza A. (age 37, born New York), Mary C. (age 20, born South Carolina), Charlotte H. (age 16, born South Carolina), and Adrian S. (age 12, born South Carolina). Also living there was a Rebecca L. Henshaw (?), age 5. In the 1880 Alabama census, the place of birth of both of Peyton Lafayette Campbell's parents is given as New York. According to family tradition, Mary Campbell was of Dutch descent. Mary's last name is in question. According to Litha Kilgore, her last name was Patton.
