Nicolas was in Canada by 1657, when he was working as a laborer at Château-Richer. In 1659, Nicolas was hired as a sailor by Pierre Emouys, Sieur de Saint-Jacques, who paid him "27 livres par mois pour une durée de quatre." He may have been back in France between 1660 and 1662.
